You need Zaxwerks 3D Invigorator. You can use your exisiting image as a texture map on the star.
If you are comfortable in the AE 3D design space, you could feasibly use your star image as the front and back of a star, then used carefully placed solids for the extruded edges.

Hmmm. My take on this is that you want a perfect mirror reflection of half of the face – end result is an almost perfect face. You’re not getting what you want because of a combination of movement of the subject, camera shake, and changes in the background.
As you’re apparently beginning to realise, the correct way to do this shot is to plan BEFORE the shoot. If the background is to look un-mirrored, consider keying the subject. The subject needs to be carefully blocked and rehearsed to maintain a constant position. Or perhaps tracking a mask edge on a certain point of the face.
However you approach it, without shooting with some forethought, the product is going to look “cheesy hall of mirrors”, as you put it.

If you just want a standard coloured border on your mask, Render/Stroke will do it for you. more complicated frames and borders may be a little more complex…

Here’s an idea, but I haven’t tried it to verify.
Import your footage twice. Interpret upper field first on one, lower field first in the other.
Drag each into its own comp. Set the resolution of both comps to 1920×540. Set the vertical scale of each clip to 50% so it is scrunched to fill the comp frame.
Set the footage layer in both comps to draft mode. (In Draft mode, AE doesn’t interpolate the fields, just shows one field or the other.)
Render out each comp as frames, not fields, and be sure to set render quality to Current Settings, not Best settings, in order to preserve the draft mode layers.
I’m pretty sure that will do what you want, although I’d be intrigued to hear why you want to do it.

Sure, but who except the tragically mathemetically challenged are gonna type “100-35” to set a keyframe of 65? As you say, “C’mon, it’s only 6 keyframes”. That also assumes the parameter has a percentage basis (between 0 to 100) – what if the keyframes belong to a parameter with a different range? My “Nope” was based on the assumption Daniel may not be ready for expressions just yet, and was almost certainly seeking a standard function like a keyframe assistant to calculate inversions. If that is what you were looking for, Daniel, the answer is nope.
