Although it has been promised for years, Particle Illusion is not available as an AE plugin, it’s a standalone application. It is also a 2D system.
AE 7 includes several particle plugins. Particle Playground is powerful but VERY difficult to use. CC Particle World is a decent particle system that responds to an AE camera. There are tutorials and demo versions available at
As noted above, Trapcode Particular is a true 3D particle system, and for my money the best of the bunch.

AE has no native EDL Import facility. The most practical way to export a FCP timeline to AE (preserving editability) is using Automatic Duck.

Note that there’s a whole Forum about it here at the Cow.

When all else fails, you know you can simply type numeric values for the mask points of an ellipse with Cmnd/Shft/M (Ctrl/Shift/M). If all the mask points are identical, the ellipse is reduced to nothing.

March 15, 2006 at 10:06 pm in reply to: Nucleo vs Open GL? Can both operate at the same time?To use Nucleo you specifically tell AE to “Render with Nucleo” – technically, it bypasses the usual render process. So no, it won’t then render with OpenGL, which is a good thing, because Nucleo spreads the load between multiple CPUs. Open GL uses GPUs, of which you probably only have one.

You can turn off Live Update with the leftmost key in the top of the timeline window. This prevents any live previews being calculated until the mouse button has been released.

I have a Quad G5 with 4Gb RAM (equal pairs of 1GB sticks), ATTO UL5D SCSI and a Decklink Extreme card. It is working great, and Gridiron Nucleo is worth every cent to boost render times by up to 400%. Just remember that these machines use PCIe, so you can’t use conventional PCI boards in it.

Oops, by the time I saw the thread below you guys had beat me to it!

AE is a fantastic tool for static design, because it is non-destructive (as mentioned above), resolution independent, and because of the wide variety of great plugins. 3D Invigorator and Shine accessible for graphic design work – great!
Working out image size is just simple math. Say you’re making a standard business card of 3.5 x 2 inches (I made that up) and you want to print at 300dpi (a standard printer resolution – personally, for something small like a business card I’d use 600dpi just coz I can!) Just do the multiplication:
3.5 inches X 300 dpi = 1050 pixels
2 inches X 300 dpi = 600 pixels.Save frame as file, and then your done! Unless you need to further edit in Photoshop, I’d recommend NOT saving a layered PSD, as some of the blending modes can act kinda screwy.

Yeah, sorry, maybe I missed a character when I copied it, it works now.
The clip is a combination of nice lighting and chroma key (for the hands), time remapping (to adjust the time/position of each moving element) and animated masks to combine/blend each moving street component at the right time.

On a Mac, the “Lossless” Output Module will save you an Animation codec Quicktime. So long as you use the NTSC DV presets in AE and FCP, you should be fine. You may want to enable field rendering in the Render settings (lower field first for DV).
