Is that only via AMA? I was under the impression that anything that didn’t support the virtualized volume approach had to use AMA to link to media in place.

It used to be Bertrand Serlet. He left this past March to focus on research pursuits. He came to Apple with Steve in the NeXT deal, and helmed the transition to OS X. Craig Federighi filled the responsibility vacuum, but has not been elevated to SVP status.
I too wonder about the political implications of not having an SVP of Mac Software Engineering, but I don’t think Lion is a weak update. There is a huge amount of new guts there, particularly for media. They basically replaced QuickTime in Lion with all new frameworks in the form of CoreMedia and AVFoundation. Not trivial stuff. I hate the new look of iCal and Address Book, I yawn at Mission Control and Launchpad, but that isn’t everything going on in Lion.

Are you saying Tim Cook, who has been at Apple since 1998 and who has been acting CEO twice in the last few years (Apple’s most successful years by far), is going to be another Scully?

QuickTime’s path into 64-bit has come in fits and starts. The QTKit frameworks that are mentioned in your linked article have since been superseded by AVFoundation in Lion (the origins of AVFoundation are in iOS 3). This all goes back to Apple’s reversal of decision to support 64-bit Carbon in 2007. The previous year, Apple told developers at WWDC that Carbon would be going 64-bit. Then one year later they did a complete 180 and said only Cocoa would support 64-bit. This totally borked big old Carbon apps like FCP, QuickTime, and third parties like Adobe. Ironically, Adobe got their Cocoa rewrite done (CS5) before Apple did.

Just an aside, there isn’t really any technical reason to use 4444 coming from 7D footage (unless you need the alpha channel). The 7D records 4:2:0 H.264, so all you are doing is taking up a ton of disk space and and gaining nothing in terms of image quality. Transcoding to a codec that can support higher color fidelity doesn’t add fidelity or quality to images that never captured the information in the first place. You can save yourself a lot of trouble and just use 422, which itself is capable of handling double the color fidelity of your camera original footage.
