Yes, but it might take longer than copying one after another.

Sonnet said at NAB2011 they would build one but it is no longer being shown on their website. Instead, they are offering a Thunderbolt to ExpressCard34 adapter that can be ted with FW800 ExpressCards. If you found another one, I’d be interested in seeing it.

FW800 speed. So no advantage aside from being a different bus from the built-in FW800. Concurrent copies would still incur significant slowdown.

You could get a large pelican case and some resealable anti-static bags. If you are just setting the backup drives on a shelf that is probably more protection than a FireWire case. Probably cheaper too.

Yes, but doing so can slow down the aggregate copy time considerably if you are going to HDDs since they write data linearly. There is also more strain on the I/O systems of the host computer and that can manifest in slower performance for parallel copies.

There is presently only one Thunderbolt storage product on the market, Promise’s Pegasus. If you are copying from FW800, that is going to be the bottleneck unless you are copying to something even slower like FW400 or USB2. There are not Thunderbolt to FW800 adapters yet that I know of.
If you need to dupe bare drive to bare drive, this thing might be the fastest way to do it. They claim throughput of 72 MB/sec.

I think his point was that Apple built a platform for innovation and they let much of the really cool innovation happen from without, while cultivating their platform. It is the difference between iPhone 1.0 with exclusively Apple apps on it and the iPhone today with over a half million apps, some of which are very innovative.

Be careful not to construe market cap with market share. Apple is hugely profitable, but still holds less than 10% of the desktop/laptop market (though they claim 20% of the sales recently), 10% of the phone market, and only dominate in tablets if you consider them a discrete market segment.
Maybe they don’t “feel” like the underdog anymore, but by the numbers they have a lot of room to grow.

This is going to be a big issue for companies who sold shared storage for FCP. The big shops with the big money are going to go Avid, and that means ActiveSAN and Xsan are not going to work. The NAS vendors are better positioned to work around Avid’s everything-at-root storage schema, but it isn’t at all trivial. EditShare and Facilis must be loving this.

Big-shop deals like this will be the difference between Avid getting out of its financial hole or not. The real money for them is in the ISIS sales, and Bunim/Murray needs a lot of storage.

“Early 2012” does not mean January. I’d be very surprised if the release Apple is foreshadowing comes prior to March. We might still get another incremental big fix release before then though.

10.0.2 was a very minor update that included only bug fixes. That is exactly what you are asking for. It’s ready when it’s ready. Had they waited to incorporate those 10.0.2 fixes in a feature release, you’d have a point.

For your budget about all you’ll be able to afford is a NAS appliance like this one. You can use it with TimeMachine for Mac clients and its own backup tool for Windows.
Just understand that you won’t be able to edit with media hosted on this class of storage.
