I understand what psf is, I am asking if there is a difference for the sequence presets, or if you can capture something that is 23.98 in either P, or psf format. Also, the rule of thumb doesn’t apply here, because someone is asking me to do 23.98P instead of psf. Which is why I’m asking the questions in the first place.

“Contrary to Duke’s comment, I do not recommend using full range SMPTE for anything other than a frame based workflow, particularly when cutting with FCP, which has a tendency to truncate all video signals into SMPTE space.”
Full range SMPTE? I thought Full range & SMPTE were 2 different settings.

April 9, 2010 at 7:54 pm in reply to: Unable to capture ProRes, Uncompressed works fineI have solved this issue by changing the deck control preset to Panasonic 59.94. Even though I’m capturing from a Sony SRW-5800.
Something about the Sony 29.97 preset it doesn’t like.

April 1, 2010 at 6:38 am in reply to: Unable to capture ProRes, Uncompressed works fineI was able to confirm Uncompressed 10-bit also does not work. It’s most likely a Final Cut issue, or Kona/AJA issue. 23.98 ProRes HQ capture works fine. It’s only with 29.97 that I am having issues.
I am having the same issue in another edit bay which I will do more testing on tomorrow. Maybe there is some deck setting that I am overlooking.

Deck = Sony SRW-5800
Drives – doesn’t matter as Uncompressed 8-bit captures correctly. I have tried internal, and external drives capable of 350+ MB/s.It seems this issue only occurs with 10-bit captures. I have tried creating the “DisableAltETTPolling.txt” file. That seemed to sort of help, but it still stops after 1 minute almost every time. I also tried removing RAM to only 2GB, but that didn’t seem to help.
So again, this seems to affect all 10-bit captures only with a 29.97 (59.94) framerate. I’m still researching fixes/workarounds. Thanks for the suggestions, I’ll keep trying some more things.
This thread seems like the same issue (from 2007!)

March 31, 2010 at 9:52 pm in reply to: Unable to capture ProRes, Uncompressed works fineWe get requests for ProRes 422 HQ deliverables. I don’t have to capture everything HQ, but it’s just an easy habit for me to get into, and it’s easier when a client wants an HQ file. I have tried capturing regular ProRes also with no luck, so it’s not just HQ that is causing issues.

March 31, 2010 at 9:44 pm in reply to: Unable to capture ProRes, Uncompressed works fineAlso, it seems 1080psf23.98 ProRes HQ also captures fine. I tried another edit bay with different specs, and it also was not able to capture 1080i 29.97 material without located timecode breaks that didn’t exist.

Mr. Bishop,
I use a GEN10. I would have the GEN10 feeding HD 23.976PsF reference to your Kona LHe. The Gen 10 should only have either 1 or 2 set to ON, and 6 set to ON. All the rest of the dip switches should be set to off. Whatever dip switch for 1 or 2 you have on should be feeding your SD deck reference. The rest of the downconversion should be happening through your AJA Control Panel.
Our DVW A500 is set like this:
Out Ref: REF
TC Gen: Internal & PresetI hope that helps.

I’m not sure if this will help, but if you look at the dip switches on the GEN10, they will read, 6, 7, 8. If you look at the manual, they will instruct you to set them as 8, 7, 6. Make sure you switches aren’t backwards.
