April 7, 2014 at 7:00 am in reply to: Apple Announces over 1 million installs of FCPXI’ve got PP cs6 installed and FCPX, I use FCPX for editing and CS6 these days only for the use of the warp stabiliser. That means that I count as 1 seat for Adobe and 1 seat for FCPX eventhough I do all editing on X only.
How many people have PP pro installed simply because they have the CC full subscription and they can download it and use it(at no extra cost) for their family videos? I bought the CS6 master collection a number of years ago and have all software installed but only really use 2 or 3 programs of that suite at the moment.
That there are people having X installed doesn’t mean they’re using it even though they’re updating it BUT, it isn’t part of a suite, one has to choose to buy it. That there are people that have Premiere Pro doesn’t mean they’re using it especially because it is part of a suite so they can install it even if they’re not really using it.
In the end we know very little of very few things 🙂

Have you seen any original files? Most stuff is on youtube and is heavily compressed. It is also recorded in camera at 4:2:0 8 bit. I can imagine the 10 bit 4:2:2 4k footage from HDMI will be better but you’ll need external recorder.
There’s not a lot of footage out there so it is kind of early to tell what it can or can’t do and how the footage will handle in post production.
I must say I agree that I also love the images I see from the bmpcc. I’ve been thinking of trading in my GH3’s and get the bmpcc’s instead but I haven’t quite been bold enough to do so.

Your comment makes me realize something, all i did was punch in the numbers, but I didn’t put https:// in front of it!
I’ll take a longer look at it this weekend, I guess it ain’t over till its over 🙂
Thanks!

i’ve been able to get the ip address but no luck getting video. I think this camera is designed to be hooked up to lumix link only

“If you’re not directly connected to the wifi ssid provided by the GH3, As @Vitaliy_Kiselev pointed out, you need to know the ip address of the GH3 to use the web remote, and find/replace all the “192.168.0.1” in the “requests.html” file with the IP address of the GH3. There is a way to make that automatic : make the application able to mimic the SSDP protocol behavior, which imply UDP and multicast… Or you can do a port scan (on port 50001) on all the machine in the same subnet as your machine, but you have to retrieve your subnet.”
Yes this is what I found in the first place but it is kind of like chinese to me. Are they saying I need to do a port scan on port 50001 on my mac? I guess I have some homework to do as I’m a total nitwit when it comes to all these wireless protocol things.
I’ll check personal view and ask around! -
Thanks Craig, I’ll dig a bit deeper! I’ll see if the guys at personal-view.com can give some insight, when I find out i’ll post it here!

Hey Craig, thank you for the fast response!
yes I have checked the manual and i’ve also found the menu item where I can find the MAC address and ip address of the camera. Strangely enough there is no ip address, or maybe it is assigned upon connection.
I’ve seen a thread at personal-view.com where you can control your GH3 from a browser. One of the things is to know the ip address of the GH3 but I can’t figure that part out.As there is an ip camera function in wirecast I was hoping to use the GH3 as an ip-camera (using its live view) but maybe that is asking too much of the GH3.
I’m loving wirecast though! Setting it up with new mac pro and 3 gh3’s + 3 black magic ultrastudio mini recorders.

For recording computer audio i believe you can use soundflower should you want to go with quicktime solution.
I personally use screencast

>The one issue I have with the T3 is that it seems to require that you get drives from CalDigit. All reviews usually include
Indeed that is true but the Caldigit T3 comes only with a 1 year warrenty, after that you’re on your own. So I’m probably going to buy a T3 and if after a year it needs an upgrade(read: more disk space) I buy the new drives but not from Caldigit.

March 13, 2014 at 11:06 am in reply to: Recommendations for software and hardware for Digital Humanities/New Media LabI agree with craig here that dslr’s are not necessarily the best place to start. When it comes to using a green screen i get better results from my panasonic HD-HS60 than from my panasonic GH3(I use a painted wall).
Should you go with a dslr, then m43’s system and in particular gh3 and soon gh4 are unbeatable in their price range. In fact, there is a lot of good stuff made on the GH2 and GH1 too and they can be picked up on ebay.
Problem with DSLR’s is that each camera will need a lens and that adds up quickly. When it comes to syncing sound I get pretty good results just from syncing sound with software like fcpx. I think adobe has plural eyes or something like that? But you can always use mic input on the camera itself.
Another point: Usually dedicated video cameras have in camera stabilisation(at least the consumer cams), that can be very handy sometimes. Unless you’re always shooting on a tripod dslr footage can be quite shaky. There are rigs for that of course but rigs cost money too 🙂
