Here a screenshot and why I hate trackless in this case.

It’s stereoscopic 3D projects (some about 50 minutes long others shorter) – each just one clip i.e. two recorded with two cams.
As there is no app I know which does a reliable stabilize of a 50 minute clip I finally decided to use the Coremelt Lock&Load with FCPX (I tried FCPX, Resolve and AE 3D Warp before).
To get good results you have to apply the stabilization to parts of the clip(s) – this is trial and error work since you to have to figure out where the best “start” for stabilization of the part is. No app (from my knowledge) allows to stabilize parts of a clip without splicing it.

With kind of best guess I spliced the 2 synched clips and made an analysis of it them just to figure out my guess was wrong. I tried the trim tool to modify the in/out – this works fine for the primary storyline but not for the clip(s) connected. Finally I solved it by using the “replace with gap” for the clips before and after the selection to be changed. It works but it’s tedious – 8 actions or more with the need to adjust instead of the half of it with simple clicks.

Another thing I miss is to render regions – just setting an in and out and render the selection. That’s why all the titles are there in the screenshot. You can use adjustment layers as well but I used titles as a replacement for markers.

As said I gave up on that at the time I needed it and did it with some tedious manual steps.

But somehow its logical that it is not working.
It is one of the disadvantages of trackless editing.
So if you got a cut thru in the primary storyline and delete it all clips connected to the 2 (or more parts) have to be reordered/relinked.
And that’s quite a challenge.

There is a little app which allows you to set the audio out per application.

I had something similar a few weeks ago, though it was a bit different.

I had a long timeline with one clip which spliced using the blade tool. The different parts did have different effects.
The timeline and the display in FCPX where fine. I exported that for customer review and found some effects applied different from those I saw in FCP.
I remembered that at least for some of them I did some tweaks during editing.
So my first idea was that FCPX took some of the render files during export. I deleted all render files and tried again.
Same result.
Then I tried to render the complete sequence to check whether the error happens in FCPX as well during the complete “faked export”.
Everything was fine.
I made another try to export the timeline and everything looked like expected.

On another forum some confirmed this odd behavior.

Another issue I had with sharing was that FCPX for some reason keeps something somewhere which says “hey don’t worry, I’m already there, use me”.
Means that bad exports cold be stored somewhere inside the project and the output is always the same.
What helped was to quit FCPX moving all Share and Render stuff to trash, then empty the trash and re-launch FCPX.

I’ve added an update.

The new version also allows symbolic links. This is way faster than copying files.
You can can use them when you know your media files stay in place and are not changed. Sparsebundle sizes also will be dramatically smaller.

Here is another “tricky trick”.

I mentioned on another forum that you easily can convert a whole (media) drive into a “virtual cam card” by adding he mentioned folder structure.
This had been a bug in earlier FCPX versions. Nowadays you have to be a bit more aggressive to cause this error.

Create a new folder and move all files of the drive into it.
Then create the cam card structure – as VCC does – including an empty .thm file.
Put a one frame .mov file into the “MOVIES” folder, name it “ZZZZZZZZ” or something with is at the end of the alphabet and doesn’t match any of your clips.

This way the disk won’t show up in FCPX’s event browser. Pressing cmd-I will show all available media on the drive – regardless in which folder.
Import will be the same as you would have selected a file from a drive – means it will just import the whole clip either a link or if checked as a copy into the “Original Media”. Even though you can select ranges in the interface they will be ignored.

Now the “tricky trick”. In Finder move the file(s) which you want to be handled as cam files to the “MOVIES” folder.
Now launch FCPX and press cmd-I.
In the import window switch to “Filmstrip View” and go back to the top and search for your “ZZZZZZZZ” movie. Every movie before this movie can be handled like a cam movie, all the rest behaves as normal.

Joe,

The file paths which are displayed are the original ones which are saved in your event or project SQL.
So you have to ask the original editor to send you the needed effects (in case they are free otherwise you have to buy them).
Effects can’t be installed on drives other than the boot drive – they are located either in you user folder or in the application support folder in the /library.

It will list all files used. Once opened with “Project Details” you will find a list of used effects.
