I’ll post the results if I get this gig.

I think a big influence for them is that they did it themselves last year and barely got by and this year they are simply going for improvement.

Oddly I had an identical gig earlier in the year; shoebox shaped room, 50 people, one speaker and limited budget. The difference was they sprang for a second camera because they wanted good face angles of people in the audience. We relied totally on the 2 cameras for audio and the wireless lav for the speaker and all was fine as one camera was mid distance from speaker to main cam. The interaction was so fast from person to person that there wouldn’t of been time for a handheld mic to be passed around. I think this situation is similar.

I new I needed a power supply for them since it was an all day gig.

I’ve read up on them and realize it’s not going to be as good as a handheld mic and they understand that.
And FCX is awesome at syncing footage based on audio waveform.

Thanks TY for confirming things and I think I’m good to go unless someone moves the goal posts.

    Thanks TY for the welcome.

    Misc:
It’s a corporate training and I doubt I can get anyone to be a runner. There just won’t be enough questions.
I’ll be renting audio equip or buying if necessary.
My contact says they can already hear each other fine in the room, the mics are just so it is recorded to go with the video.

I’ve never used the DR-40 type of mic. Does it need a mic attached to it? I thought it was the mic.
I’m looking for a way to just turn on a recording device and leave it on all day while I record the speakers to the cameras using their lav mics.

I was thinking the DR-40 will record all day. I wasn’t planning on letting anyone push a button.
I was thinking 2 of them would cover a tight room of 50 people; either placing them within the crowd on tripods or along the perimeter.

Can’t I record the camera what the DR-40’s are recording via the mini jack in on the camera since the XLR ports will both be in use with the lavs?

    Thanks,
    Al

    Yes I meant +48v phantom.

Shotgun mic – the one that came with the camera – XLR inputs on top handle adaptor.
    Lav – Samson32 UHF Diversity

Environment: Rectangle room with about 40 people jammed in it. Very little space to use but they know that. There just isn’t space for a boom mic and I have no control. The speaker who I know doesn’t rove much, will wear the wireless mic and that goes to Camera 1 in the back of the room, about 50 feet away. I’m on closeups and can get in people’s faces if needed. That’s what they want. When people get up to speak IT WILL ONLY BE FOR A MOMENT OR 2. Main speaker has the lav. Sound capture isn’t ideal but I think it’s covered well enough for this since I’m allowed to move closer to people. They just didn’t choose a good space for this. Echo is not a factor, it would be opposite, too much absorption.

On the top handle XLR until that screws into top of camera:
When not using a lav on the camera: I have Channel 1 and 2 BOTH set to input #1, +48v
But With the lav I have Channel one on input #1 (the mic that came with cam) and Channel 2 set MIC not Line. Right?

In my cam settings I have under Audio a setting called “Input 1 Mic. ref.” with choices from -32db up to -62db and another setting “Ref. Level” with choices of -20db down to -12db settings and don’t know what I should try those on. This is a new cam and I’m not sure what those do.
    Thanks,
    Al

    Well I got it.
A bunch of cheap plastic .
Hardly any weight to it and it just feels really cheap.
Tryign to decide what to do and will shoot a function next week.
    Fortunately a 30 day return.

Turns out they all have access to Adobe Premiere in the Lab and most have Windows Movie Maker on their PC. Not one Mac user like me out of 9.

I will check out Resolve as we might need a back up.

    Thanks Mark.

Yes my post is a little confusing but I thank you for responding .

I’m looking for feedback on both; free software and the learning curve for me.
    So you helped .
Thanks for confirming that since I know FCP that Premiere won’t be too difficult.

Since the class just started I don’t know if the students will use the Premiere or prefer whatever is on their laptop. I have a feeling we’ll use both.

I’d like for them to collaborate on an editing project and hoping youtube will allow that. Do you know if
youtube allows more than one person to access the same video ?

    Thanks,
    Al

June 21, 2012 at 9:25 pm in reply to: Capturing/Importing Video Mini DV as you shoot

    Hey Mark,
I’d already planned to record to DVD simultaneously and that might turn out to be key.

The customer wants to be able to leave with a finished file that will play on their laptop. She has a Lenovo THinkpad and I’m on a Mac.

What I’d planned to do was record to Canon Hi-Def (memory cards) and then copy that file over using a card reader to her laptop BUT that produces an AVCHD file and she isn’t a techy so I’m not sure she will be able to play that file without processing it. She wants it ready to go as she is leaving town.

So hopefully she will be happy with the DVD after finalizing.

    Thanks,
    Al
