My goal is to find an inexpensive way (on a PC, preferably) to create those .mov files FCP7 generates from P2 cards (with Log and Transfer), without having to use FCP7. It is important that no re-encoding occurs. I am confident “Log and Transfer” does not re-encode, but merely re-wraps/remuxes the separate .mxf audio/video clips into a single .mov file which contains both audio and video. I know Premiere/Avid can handle P2 cards directly, but that’s not what I am after. To summarise, I need my P2 DVCPRO HD clips stored/transfered as .mov files, not in P2 folder format where audio/video files are split. Embedded metadata is not critical.

I did a quick test with the aforementioned AWPro Client, but it generated a video-only .mov file.

Video Mastering Works can edit, too. Certainly not as advanced as Avid/Premiere but way cheaper and more flexible in some ways. FCP7 has been uninstalled and is not available. This is a very interesting find, I will test and report. It reportedly can re-wrap to mp4/mov.

Thanks for your suggestions. I think ffmbc (free tool) will do this with its rewrap function, I’ll give it a try.

Can this be done without re-encoding? I thought Adobe applications (don’t know about Sorenson) always re-encode. I am almost sure FCP7 did the “conversion” to .mov losslessly, since it was an extremely fast process – through “Log and Transfer”, if I remember correctly.

Using mostly TMPGEnc software (Video Mastering/Authoring), which will happily accept mov/mkv files.

If your problem is solved by disabling MRQ too, then LAN has nothing to do with it.

Thank you. I am not sure, but it is possible that they’ve been cut. Can you please suggest such a video format? The project is complete and the editor is not available. I am hardly an expert at PPro… It will be quite the task for me to replace the “bad” parts in the timeline with the newly encoded ones. At least I won’t have to encode the whole sequence, because I did some more test, and isolating just those parts (100 frames or so) does not resolve the problem. Disabling MRQ solves it and my current solution is to just cut and join the non-MRQ parts, in more familiar applications on the PC.

Just came across another problematic clip, it’s a mov file with all details and same neighbouring clips… Again, it seems artifacts begin on scene change.

Thanks. It’s a 16:9 sequence, which includes several 4:3 clips (or 4:3 that have been re-encoded to 16:9), but mostly 16:9 ones. I encode to CBR 7.8, maybe I’ll give 2-pass VBR a go. Disabling MRQ always fixes it. Noticed this: there is no data rate info at all on the offending clip (P2 Movie type/.mxf). The preceding clip (and all of the following) have all details (and they are all .mov’s).
