Well, I didn’t really think it could be as easy as just a loose connection, but you were right. It took me a while to locate it, but after about a half-hour poking around with my trusty plastic fork, the sound sprung to life. Now I have a $600 surroud sound receiver for free. (Now if anyone has a set of surround sound speakers they’re planning on throwing out, let me know your address).

Thanks. I think it is from 2000 or so, so not too old and not too new. I tried the headphone thing, and I get the same results through the headphones. It is both channel at the same time, and the problem seems to fade in and out a bit rather than just cut in and out. Thanks for your help…

No, not illegal per se, I’ve done it several times. But if you are hesitant, the people to call and ask are the Secret Service….

I looked into this myself a year or so ago. I tried to work with one of the respected agencies, and they “agreed to take me on” but were unable to provide any sales projections, even rough ones, for any of the projects we discussed, so I ended up never doing it…. I din’t want to front the money without knowing I had a chance to get it back. In the end I decided it was a no go.
However, I learned quite a bit… In particular, if you want to sell stock through an agency, you need to have every detail covered, and I mebna COVERED. This means LOCATION RELEASES, TALENT RELEASES, ETC. If you take a pricture of an airplane, they are going to want you tha have a release from US AIR and LAX, unless it is a completely generic shot. And believe me, my and your idea of generic is VERY different from theirs. They vetoed some shots of cars I had because they said you could just kind of make out the people inside…( I assure you, you could not make out the people inside).
Anyway, that’s what I know… good luck.
And PS, they probably don’t need shots of airplanes. If it’s nearby and easy, it’s already been done.

HMMM…just installed it and it doesn’t work…just keeps crashing on starting up Red. Tried installing it twice, and then I had to go back to my original Red disk and reinstall to get it to work. So now I am back to 3.0. Any idea what might cause this? I have OSx 10.3.9…says it ought to work. If not, any idea where i can get the previous update for Red? I’ll post above to the whole forum as well…

Great. Thanks for the info. By the way, what’s in the 3.0.4 patch? I haven’t installed it yet.

October 11, 2005 at 7:01 pm in reply to: Asking for suggestions for a SMALL production/marketing company.I can’t imagine what else you need unless you have a specific project in mind, or for some reason you live out of reach of a rental house.
A good rule of busines is to never let the tail wag the dog! Let your incoming work dictate your equipment needs, never own anything you don’t need to (especially in this business where things go obsolete fast), and if you have extra cash burning a hole in your pocket, spend it on marketing and outreach rather than equipment. Now your business plan can concentrate on your strategy for bringing in business.

One final pitfall you may encounter is that the sound guy will screw ya!
Here is one particular thing to look out for. When you do your soundcheck before the event you will get a considerably different level than when the actual event starts. This is because they will almost always figure out that they need to crank up the volume once the event starts and they have a full room (as opposed to the empty room that they did the check with). In most cases this will result in your feed getting quite a bit hotter in the matter of a few seconds…you need to be prepared for it and make sure you leave lots of room to turn down. (Also, leave some room to turn up, too. You just never know with these guys!) In addition, they will continue to fuss with it throughout the night, so be prepared for your levels to dance around.

I’m sure that many people on this site could help you with this (myself included). If you want to discuss it one to one, contact me at alex@filmboston.com…
