I did eventually find the commands to change. Was looking in the first preferences file that comes up when you hit the ‘Reveal Preferences in Finder’ button, which isn’t the shortcuts one. As soon as I realised my mistake I was happy… but also felt a bit dumb, haha.

Ended up posting the result on the main After Effects thread.

As you say, most people probably wouldn’t need to change any shortcuts but I’m a bit weird, haha – I like having my D and F keys to advance frames. Have adjusted the same thing in Premiere Pro because that’s where your hand naturally rests. I don’t have to keep moving it over to the far right simply to move frames forward or back. Makes for a much quicker and natural workflow… for me anyway.

Anyway, thanks again for your help… and super-prompt reply. 🙂

So, I kept looking around… on the Cow, and found this solution.

KeyEd Up is obsolete in CC 2014. To change a keyboard shortcut do this:

Go to File > Preferences > General and hit the ‘Reveal Preferences in Finder’ button at the bottom.

From the various preferences files there, open the Adobe After Effects 13.0 Mac en_US Shortcuts.txt

Scroll down to the command you want to assign a keyboard shortcut to and simply type it in (being careful to stick to the same formatting as everything else there).

For the keyboard shortcuts I needed this worked fine but I’m not sure what would happen if you typed in something that conflicted with one of AE’s standard keyboard commands.

Maybe someone might know? And then how to get around it?

(I know people will think “But why would you want to change a standard keyboard command” but everyone has a different workflow and sometimes certain keys in AE are just never used and would be better off assigned to things you actually do use)

Wouldn’t hurt to know how to change them without breaking anything.

Hi Michael,

Was just trying to solve a problem with KeyEd Up in CC 2014 and found your thread, where you said ‘words to the effect’ that “You can modify keyboard shortcuts by modifying the text file in the preferences, etc”.

Was wondering if you knew actually how to do that? When I open those preferences I can’t find the shortcuts in amongst all that text anywhere. Bit frustrating. KeyEd Up makes is soooo simple but it’s just not working in CC 2014 unfortunately.

Specifically, I’m looking for the Advance 1 Frame Forward and Advance 1 Frame Back shortcuts. I’ve had this changed to the D and F keys forever now as that makes so much more sense to me (having my left hand on the left side of the keyboard and the other on the mouse). Anyway, sorry to bother you specifically with my problem. It’s just that you had answered a similar question in the past, so I thought you might have a quick solution.

Would love to hear from you. Either thanks for your time.

I agree the new trim tools in CC are awesome, and I do find myself editing directly in the Timeline a lot more than in the past. But I have a soft spot for fine tuning with the Trim Monitor. Just like being able to see the outgoing and incoming edit points at the same time. Maybe I’m old-fashioned, haha.

Hopefully, there’s some way to get back to its former (simpler) functionality. Not the end of the world if it doesn’t though… just pining. 🙂

Thanks for your quick reply.

I think I’ve found the problem, however = ME!

Paint was actually working okay, it’s just that I was painting out ‘greenscreen gunk’ on a Comp that contained both the keyed footage and its background together.

I must’ve been daydreaming as I should have been working on just the keyed layer itself. The ‘black paint’ wasn’t a brush colour at all – it was just the Comp Background colour (coincidentally black) showing through my transparent brush strokes!

I feel a bit silly… but thought I should own up, haha.

They toggle back and forth through the items in the Layer window drop-down list.

Thanks for replying.

I know I’m pretty low on RAM for PPro. Was just hoping to get by on my measly 6GB for now. Do you think that would be the cause?

If so, I’ll just blow my budget and max out on RAM – be worth not having the frustration.

As for drive management, my PPro project and all my footage live together on an internal drive, separate from the system drive.

Perhaps I should have the PPro project on the system drive and the footage on the separate internal drive. Do you think that would work out better?
