What is the WinSAT index of the system? WinSAT disk (or AJA System Test or BMD Disk Test) numbers on your non-system volumes?

Sparse image bundles is exactly what would bring a Synology NAS to a grinding halt, and from perusing their forum, that’s just the beginning of the troubles.

If it shows as a playback option in Premiere Pro, you seem to be doing everything right.
One possible culprit could be frame rates and resolutions. BMD won’t tell you if it senses anything on its inputs and has to get the signal just right to display it. So I’d try loading a BMD-safe timeline preset (1080i/29.97 for instance), render a short piece of a timeline and see if you get playback.
Other than that, I am clueless what may be happening and would perhaps try trashing Pr preferences or try a different user account.

The external monitor is connected to the UltraStudio (via HDMI) or to the back of the Promise array?
I’ve heard a similar story with a monitor daisy-chained to the iMac with an array in the middle, and the guesses are that (1) Thunderbolt is overwhelmed, (2) iMac is overwhelmed.
If the external monitor is connected to the Blackmagic device, than it still could be the iMac/TB issue: pulling a lot of data off of the array and then sending it to Blackmagic may still overwhelm the iMac. The BMD device may be playing a part in it too. A good test would be to play a file off of a local drive (internal iMac drive) instead of Promise and see if it exhibits the same issue. (It doesn’t have to be anything too heavy or uncompressed – just high resolution.)

I was not questioning the disadvantages or benefits of RAID5 on high density consumer drives, there’re enough turf wars about that out there already.
All I asked was to support your statement of:

…yet all you offered was more assumptions that you consider reasonable.
So I’m gonna bow out of this conversation.

Too many assumptions for my taste:
– where the significance of a URE is concerned (I don’t think there is any difference between a degraded RAID5 or RAID0 in that respect),
– assigning a lot of weight to the probability of RAID5 going (and staying) degraded.You either need to make bullet-proof assumptions and make conclusions from that, or actually find a study from a reputable source comparing RAID5 and RAID0 reliability based on sound statistics.
My hunch? Unless individual disks’ reliability is horrendous sending RAID5 into a degraded mode all the time, RAID5 is vastly more reliable per GB of space per hour of service vs. RAID0.
And if you have a hot spare? Almost as good as RAID6.

If you need simultaneous transfer to multiple targets (for redundancy, backup or other reasons) or verification of the transfer – yes.
In other words if you transfer a lot and it’s critical stuff – Shotput Pro is a good thing to use.
