SD, HD, frame rate, bit depth? In other words, what is the bitrate of the uncompressed video you are planning to capture, and how much of it do you need to store?
Also, do you need uncompressed? Why?
A couple of 7200rpm disks in RAID0 should handle most scenarios, that’s the way I’d go.

The very 1st thing I’d do is attempt to clone the volume, e.g. using Casper or some other block-level process, and keep a log of the process to see if you get any read errors, and how many.
The fact that you can read some files gives hope.
The problem can be caused by file system corruption (not RAID related), RAID engine failure, and/or drive failure. That’d be the 2nd thing to figure out, and I am afraid, you will need expert help on that.

Only the top-shelf 15″ $2.6K model seems to have the discrete graphics chip (GT-750). The rest – Intel Iris (Pro) graphics, which is unlikely to do hardware GPU acceleration despite its hardware OpenCL support: too weak.
Very fast SSDs employed in these will probably help keep the system responsive even when you hit the memory ceiling, so I agree with Todd, 16GB should work, and is a better choice than 32GB on older models.
The new Mavericks memory compression may help too – wonder if anyone has any real world results.

There is a possibility they are doing that for reputation and to build up a portfolio. I see similar things happening on Helpouts – fairly sophisticated advice for free. Hopefully these prices will go up after the reputation is built.
That said – India has less than 10% of US’ per capita GDP. While this doesn’t necessarily mean their operating costs are 10% of the US average, it’s probably a good indicator. 🙂

I think $5 is the minimum with no maximum. The good things about it: a reputation system, international reach. The ebay of services if you will.
The bad: international reach. 🙂 No matter how hard you try, can’t compete with someone of equal skills who is either subsidized by the government (China), uses pirated software (China, Russia, etc.), or whose living / operating costs are a small fraction of mine.
Google Helpouts will likely kill Fiverr though: it’s got the monstrous marketing muscle behind it, integration with other Google services (hangouts), the starting price can be free.

Can’t fault them for it: nearly any similar box made at that time had a 3G eSATA, not 6G – probably for a good reason: 6G wasn’t available from the manufacturers of the on-board controllers.
In a similar fashion, you’d think that years after USB 3.0 was intro’d and started shipping, they’d do something about the meager transfer rates that rarely go above 50% of the line speed? E.g. enable UAS on some of these boxes? Nope.
It’s not their fault.

This may wake up the off-topic dragon. The “lameness” you speak of is likely the result of decades of political and cultural processes and I don’t know what it’d take to reverse them. Does anyone?

It’d be nice but not a sure thing.
To maximize transfer rates, I’d personally look at SAS boxes. There’re small ones, with four or five bays and a 6G backplane giving you a theoretical line speed of 24Gbs in full duplex.
