  • Thanks for the suggestion Derek, yes unfortunately that was the first thing I tried. Trapcode MIR is a plugin that “simulates” 3D on 2D layers, so AE doesn’t consider it the same as actual 3D layers.

    But good try.

  • Here it is, sorry, I’ll do more research before I post again

  • Cyriak uses AE even though it’s hard to believe.

I’m now playing with a concept where I have all my different dancer layers sitting at an origin point, and I have a bunch of nulls that have motion paths which draw out the tree. I figured I can just use an expression to tell each consecutive layer to be at the position of a null valueAtTime(index), and it seems to work great. But now the issue is having the layers auto orient the same way the nulls do. Since auto-orient doesn’t create keyframes there is no rotation value for me to parent the layers rotation to on the null. I tried looking up a relative .toComp for rotation but can’t find anything.

Any idea how I could parent a layers rotation to a layer with auto-orient?

    Thanks!

  • Thanks Dave for your response.

I think the person I wish I could ask my question to is Cyriak, who seems to do this fractal tree growth of video clips in every one of his videos.

November 23, 2013 at 8:19 pm in reply to: CS5: Unable to allocate # MB of memory…

Hi I have also recently received this error. The strange thing is that the error arises even on previous save versions which I know for sure worked less than a week ago.

I know my system is outdated (a 2008 mbp w/ 4gb ram) but it was working fine on my project. The only things I’ve done recently were replace the screen, and take out and put back the RAM. The screen works fine, and the ram is perfectly recognized.

    Any idea what gives?

    I’ve tried:
    resetting PRAM
    purging cache
starting with caps lock on (so it doesn’t try rendering the frame)
    resetting AE settings

    I’m really boggled.

    Thanks

Hey, I have the same problem, did you find a solution?

    Thanks

Ahhh! I actually figured it out. Your formula was helpful for tying the layer index to the time advancement, but really what I needed was something that was going to have each layer start at the value of the first time keyframe, and then advance linearly, regardless of the placement of the second keyframe. That way I can basically decide at what time the layer (a time remapped precomp) starts playing its internal timeline, based only on a value I enter in the first keyframe.

And thanks to learning about “startTime”=the start time of the layer, this is the formula that worked:

    (time-startTime)+valueAtTime(startTime)

Or of course I could just add a slider to the comp, and use this

    (time-startTime)+effect(“Slider Control”)(“Slider”)

The idea is that I have the same action happening to many different images, and instead of applying the keyframes to each image, I just precomp’d a series of sequenced images, then applied a looping set of keyframes to that precomp, so the action repeats, but each time there is a new image. Then the idea is that I wanted each of these images with their actions, to fly around in space. So now that the placement of each image will be something I want to manipulate manually, I merely have to precomp the looping precomp, trim this main comp to be the length of one loop and then apply the above expression and slider, and then I can duplicate that, and with each duplicate, I can decide which image its showing by merely changing the value of the slider.

phew… you probably didn’t care to read that, but if you did it’d be cool to hear your thoughts.

    Thanks
