I agree that it would be naive of Apple to do that. I actually would be amazed if they didn’t work it all out. As mentioned elsewhere, I’m simply waiting it out until the dust clears, before making any future decisions. Speculation is rife. Jobs has his own way of dealing with upgrades, which is very different than other companies. It’s worked so far very well for them. I have a lot invested in FCP, even if I don’t use it much anymore. When I need it, it’s there. Is it worth upgrading… we’ll see.

Understood. I agree. Thanks.

Odd, I can’t see any jello when I watch the first 1.5 minutes. The camera isn’t rock solid,it was hand held, but it doesn’t seem to be exhibiting shutter roll. Am I just not seeing it? Or was it simply a recommendation so I wouldn’t have it happen?

There is only one land based interview, and that’s the opening sequence. I don’t see it there. Am I missing it in plain site? Perhaps you are referring to the short interview on the boat later on, with Jule describing the outfall? I believe that was simple camera motion, as the boat was rocking and he was in motion too. I debated using that, but what he said was worth using, I felt. Was that the part you meant?
I agree that tripods are worth it. I do usually try to use a tripod, but it wasn’t appropriate on the trip, given the boat size.

Well, to be clear, there’s problems with most software, and it’s often really hard to track root causes down. The frustrating part of what I described is how easy it is to reproduce the problem.
I’m willing to assume that some of this is due to trying to maintain the ability to handle any and all format types. These codecs are not friendly to editing. I assume that *one* of the reasons FCP has been so stable when I’ve used it is that it’s forcing you to use ProRes. Vegas has been great, when it works without crashing, and saves me vast amounts of transcode time. But I have to say, given my latest experiences, I think that transcoding may be worth exploring to see if it helps reduce crashes.
This system of mine is immensely stable. I only experience crashes with Vegas, I have 8 GBs RAM, multi terrabytes of hard disk, and on simple projects (one I’ll post soon) it’s just fine. One camera, one format, no problems.
Could your problems be due to something else? “it’s possible”. The problem we have is that when someone like us post a problem, it’s very hard to ask all the right questions to make sure we aren’t missing the obvious. It’s a limitation to typing stuff like this into a box on a screen, rather than sitting over your shoulder.
On a positive side, here’s my latest, non crashing project. Just approved for release last night. A quick trip along with the Washington Department of Health and the local Marine Resources chairman, to sample water for pathogens that might affect shellfish. A lot of pretty scenery. Heck I learned alot from this one day shoot.
Coffee awaits, and the beginning of another day trying to work around the crashes to get the next project completed by tomorrow.

This is a real good point that’s been brought up. I would give a call to the local Apple store and discuss this issue with their small business coordinator. I would assume that if Apple is going to push the whole purchasing process towards the App store they have something in the works behind the curtain. It might be discussed at the WWDC. For example, us developers get a certain ability to purchase Macs and software through a special process. Maybe they are getting something together on the software front, like for developers.
They wouldn’t be going public with this process just yet, but they will release it when they ship the product. So getting together to do some NDA (non disclosure agreement) discussions with Apple SMB (small medium business) people would be a good timing situation. You might influence their decision making process now. At release, forget it.

Don’t worry, we love ya Wayan. We’ve all been in the righteous mode at some point in our lives. Just remember this thread the next time you are going to attack someone like me, for simply being critical of Apple. You, I and everyone else are Apple’s *customers*. We deserve more than being treated as if our investment in Apple’s products are just something that we should accept with blind faith.
Best of luck.

Wayan: You win the crown of Apple Fan Boy! (G). Go get a beer and chill my man…it’s all just about tools…I personally don’t get this riled up about my table saw… nor my lawn mower…deep breath… repeat after me…”it’s just software…it’s just software”…
off the the races…

I’ve been holding off making any kind of judgement on the FCP X situation. Having been in software development for a major player in the industry though much of my career, the early PR statements were very troubling to me. I’m still hoping that Apple doesn’t decide that FCP is a product they can no longer afford to support, which is what the marketing hype has led me, personally, to assume. If they really were going to go ‘all out’ for us, they would have taken a much different tack. But I will wait and hope I’m proven wrong.
I assumed that we would be hearing a lot more at the WWDC, since the developers that are in all the ancillary third party support would need to be briefed on how to make products and services for X. I’m hoping that Apple assumed that they have already made the ‘major’ announcement on this, and that they will cover the dev issues at the breakout sessions. There’s a much smaller community of devs for FCP than the overall universe of Apple, iPod, iPad, etc. And there was only so much time to be given to the keynote. It’s not worrying, just yet, but the amount of breakout sessions devoted to X will tell the true tale.
Anyone there that can let us know what the amount of hours devoted to FCP is out of the overall program in the coming days? Are they on the second day or the last day? That is important. The most critical groups will get the premium slots.
