January 8, 2010 at 8:37 am in reply to: Sound recording – thoughts on time code devices?been a week, trying again. What’s folks using to capture sound into the HMC 150? Looking for recommendations on Sound Devices, maybe Oade Brothers modded Tascam…I hate buying cheap,(as if Oade’s is cheap) and I seem to always upgrade, but cost is cost…and it seems that a mixer is probably the next thing I should get, before a recorder…any thoughts here?

Ben, I agree with the idea that the pics you are using aren’t sized right. Get those things down to manageable sizes, under 1MB to be safe. Barring that, this might be a job for 64 Bit Win7 or Vista, instead of XP (which you said you used) with Vegas. XP will only address at most 2 GBs of RAM for all applications running in the memory space (4GBs total, but 2 reserved for the OS) and that includes all your antivirus, and other oddball applets that load at startup. XP also had other limitations of resources that would run out long before you ran out of RAM, and yes, there was a PAE version but that was mainly for the Server products back then. It was a hack to get the OS over the hump until the true 64 bit versions arrived.
So 64 bit does free you up to have lots more head room, and I bet that’s why Sony wants all new users of Win7 to head that way. IMHO a video editor tool should be addressing all available memory. There may be other reasons to not go to 64 bit, but this seems like a reason to have someone else with a 64 bit system try it out for you.
Hope that helps.

Yes, I’ve dragged the files from the card to the top level of the drive, and have formatted the card in the camera and not the computer. As of today, I went out and shot more footage, and while I can L&T from the card, files transferred across don’t work…still can’t figure out why.

In looking and comparing the specs on the Canon to my HMC-150, it seems it’s a similar price.
150 has two XLR connectors for input quality mics. No addons needed. I like that alot.
150 has a support for timecode built in. That’s nice. It’s able to jam sync to a slate.
150 supports 32 GB SD cards, not sure if Canon can for now. I assume it could, but…?
150 supports zebras, manual iris control, ND filters, decent gain control, white balance, flip accessory so I don’t need to flip with 35mm lens, waveform monitor etc. some of these are also on the Canon.
Leica lens is absolutely excellent, IMHOcheck out this excellent overview video by Ciao Simbula of City College of SF.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dk0ezIcQwsESo, for the price, I think it comes down to tape vs. tapeless. I’d probably still go with the 150 in the price range though if I stepped up in price, I would also be looking at Sony or higher priced Canons.

Thanks to all of you for your advice. I’m too far away geographically to take a course, and am pretty good with manuals & self teaching, plus I’ve got a good deal of patience, having worked in the software industry for years. I’ve got the time and will continue to muddle through FCP as best I can, and will certainly take your advice about it’s weaknesses to heart. CU all later….

Yes, I did. It keeps giving me an error message that says that something like the ‘file structure is not the same. Here’ s the error message.I’ve attached it. See below. The directory structure is correct, it has files in it, and appears exactly as it does on the SD card, and on the Windows directories when I copy it on my other machine. The error message here is on the Mac, when i try and choose a clip to L&T from my external or internal drive. However, once again, the SD works fine with L&T. Not sure what’s going on.

Not a problem. Since I posed a similar question to the group a month back, and had a lively discussion on it then, I assumed there were people interested. Have the forum admin delete it. CU 8tr…

Let me try and clarify. I was able to see the SD card just fine, and L&T’d the flles across into ProRes..but when I copy the SD directory structure to, say, my external hard disk (root level), call it anything, and keep that structure intact, then it doesn’t work. It’s like I can’t log and transfer from a local hard disk. No matter what I do, like go to the wheel icon and specify a path to it. It error messages to me that there is no supporting directory type. It’s like it’s saying that it cannot understand the file structure unless it’s actually physically on the SD card. There are files there, though, and video.
This works just fine on a Windows machine running Sony Video Vegas, sitting right next to my MacPro. So I know the card is ok, there is stuff recorded on it, and Sony (Windows 7) sees it. And the clips come into FCP just fine when they are originate from the SD card.
Does that help clarify the question?
Is this a bug or something deliberate for a process issue?

Depending on whether your outdoor work is done in winter will determine your choice of camera. The HMC-150 is not rated by Panasonic for sub zero (F) shooting. Probably due to the zoom lens. Also, if you are working near the ocean, you need to consider salt water issues with a camera. It will take a beating.
Also, do you want to stick with tape or tapeless? That also narrows the choice. Sony has a decent mid level group of choices in both tapeless and tape. Panasonic seems to be multiple choices but above your price range.
You also don’t clarify whether you are shooting for personal use, the web, etc. or if you are looking to do work for clients, or broadcast quality.
Any folks out there doing nature work in the field?
Also, it might be better to post this to another forum. This is more for the NLE, not the camera.

I’ve just spend the last month evaluating Video Vegas with AVCHD from the HMC150. I didn’t have any problems with compatability of the format using Vegas 9.0c, which is the most recent version. I must say I didn’t push the envelope on it’s use though. Perhaps someone else on the forum with longer experience I don’t know anything about the specific camera itself, but my particular setup didn’t have any problems consuming the video, producing nice results, etc. Be warned though, that you should be running a quad processor machine or better, with lots of RAM, as these files are huge, compared to SD. So I’d be more concerned about the computer you are running them on than the camera itself.
