This is a case of moving goal posts. For Apple, the “target user” has changed. Apple is not primarily targeting broadcast professionals anymore with FCP X. Yes, they are adding some features that might make it more palatable to broadcast professionals, but their primary target demographic has changed to address a group of users that is much larger and broader than those only doing broadcast and film work.
Apple released exactly the product that they intended to. It’s just business. Fortunately if you don’t feel that FCP X addresses your needs, you have many other great options such as Avid, Premiere Pro and now Smoke.

I’m with you there. Trendy and increasingly overused glow/blur dissolves and film flashes are going to look just as dated in a few years as gratuitous lens flares and light rays do now. Maybe sooner.

Don’t use pass through audio. Change the setting in Compressor to 16-bit 48kHz stereo AIFF.
As you have discovered, it is essential to convert any h.264 footage to ProRes when editing in FCP (even in FCP7).
