Feel your pain, man. I was switching a multicamera symposium webcast when the “anointed” carrier lost their connection. Again, at an IT event. Some perverse gremlin at work?
We carried on while lots of IT craziness went on around us. (At least we had archives.)
The patch they bodged together involved using (sharing) the hotel’s T-1. Worked OK…until the next break, when every attendee started checking mail and messages.
It’s nice when it works, it’s something very different when it doesn’t.
Maybe instead of a Flip – if it’s meant to be in a DV codec – I’d keep an old PD-170 around. At least it has real (XLR) audio connectivity.

In that case, what I’d do is render out the clip as uncompressed, bring it in and simply do one overall opacity change.
-
Keyframe “opacity” for both tracks at the same rate. (In your “effects” tab, usually with/behind the source monitor.)
It works, I’ve done it multiple times.

PBS stations are quite fond of doing that. Not only getting public money, constantly begging to the public directly, then cutting the local production community out completely. Lots of horror stories on that, all over.
Public Radio does things like that too. I have some behind-the-scenes tales from clients on both scores.
And on the other side of the coin, our “wonderful” Governor is looking at eliminating the MN “Snowbate” incentives for production here in the state, either failing to realize that production companies coming here from elsewhere generate far more sales revenue than the program costs, or deliberately targeting something that can be seen as “evil Hollywood” in preparation for his inevitably failed 2012 Presidential run.

Maybe those of us carrying a touch of gray (or more) ought to start thinking about conducting some of these workshops.
Then again, I have clients – and clients of clients – that are walking back away from the webcam look because it’s just too grisly for doctors, C-level execs, and the like.
There’s a sweet spot there, and I think I’m finding it.

Why not go to a gardening shop and get landscape rock? Or gravel?

What Mark said.
I used to do the multicamera flash-sync thing too, and I loved it, but this was back when I was still cutting on tape, and I had an edit room that could sync-roll multiple transports and let me both cut from the controller like a live switch and build and store a list on the fly.
Ingesting this all to drives and an NLE is going to take a lot more time than that.
Hire a TriCaster with the switcher panel, switch the show live, and then you just have to access whatever you need to cover up any errors. And you record to a file, so it’s there to be edited. (Just remember to plug in an external drive for that!)
While you’re at it, hire comms for your camera people. Trust me, it makes life so much better.

There are editors, and there are operators.
Both of them know how to push buttons to generate an end product. The editors’ end products tell stories, the operators’ end products…well…sometimes, if the tides are running right and the moon is not obscured by clouds…

I was quite active for several years back when it was ITVA. A board member of our local chapter, even, for two years – co-chair of programming.
MCAI (at least here in MN) is far less active than ITVA was.
We used to be a jumbo chapter. Now, I don’t even hear about it any longer. The chapter web page is highlighting a December 2007 event. Other pages are similarly “fresh”.
YMMV, but I’d save my bucks for some other purpose.
Nothing personal…
