    Don’t think its the disks…I’m running off a brand new, 400GB Seagate 7200rpm hard disk with a 16MB cache and I defrag almost daily. I tried removing all the peripheral usb/firewire devices and this seems to have solved the problem. It could just be a coincidence though. I’ll be back if it happens again! Thanks for the advice people

    No, I’ve only got the camera attached via firewire although to be fair I don’t need this attached when editing. I’ve killed all processes other than windows and premiere so I can be sure its not a virus scan or anything like that kicking in. I hadn’t thought about disconnecting all the usb devices though, might this help?

    What I can’t understand is why I can scrub through the timeline just fine and see the video and audio as it should be but then as soon as i press play it craps kittens.
