Like say.. what if the timeline/app linking was so strong that apple could just open you into colour with the timeline sitting there live – you still see the bins, the media’s below, you can edit it, but you’ve now got nodes above along with the viewer – that’d be rather smoke like maybe?
There’s a thing one of the guys said, that they suspect the whole project is a database now – that smart bins are making database queries, so no more saving amongst other things – I was wondering does anyone have a view as to how much that kind of full blown live project database would impact application linking? I’m totally making this up as a I go, I should add. I’ve hardly ever used the current roundtripping stuff except for with soundtrack pro sort of.

well this is the town for going nuts on the upcoming X version… but if you’ve made the save, you should basically be fine – if you don’t trust the saved file – navigate to the autosave folder – and open up a few of the autosaves running up to your last save – the default is 30 minutes i think – they’re all time stamped and they’re in your final cut pro documents folder, you should be ok working a good version out of there.
Do it as a clean start tho – if you’re storing footage off an external drive, boot her up, boot the mac, then head for the autosave folder, root through the recent saves.

April 25, 2011 at 6:04 pm in reply to: How much money is FInal Cut Pro X really going to cost? What Craig says is right, even if they don’t particularly upgrade it anymore bar a few codecs, why wouldn’t they put compressor up on the AppStore? Its money for old rope, they copy the app over, slap up an about page, and wait for the till to ring. As much as anything else that’s a good reason to believe apple will be introducing multiple pieces of software here – they’re multiple revenue streams.
they probably won’t have worked quite as hard on the other bits, but they know everyone will buy them – as long as- they are sufficiently differentiated from the stuff we already have in FCS2. Maintaining that 32 bit float colour space in motion or something say. Apple like to make money: leaving out another two to three software revenue streams going forward is leaving piles of money on the table and that really isn’t plausible.http://www.ogallchoir.net

April 25, 2011 at 11:50 am in reply to: when to invoke the magnetic timeline and what is a fragile timeline really.hey Andy – I have used FCP from time to time, or professionally in broadcast since 2001 to look at it another way.. I have rocked clip swapping as currently implemented from time to time..;)
I’ll bet you though, that this is the default behaviour of the timeline, and it is certainly – clipswapping – audio avoidance – and snap – rolled into one, because all those behaviours are on show when he describes the magnetic timeline – the question is –
if, if it is default behaviour for the timeline, should it be?http://www.ogallchoir.net

April 25, 2011 at 10:55 am in reply to: when to invoke the magnetic timeline and what is a fragile timeline really.Amen to the three point. And nah – absolutely – magnetic, she can be turned off for sure, it was just that point where he was like ‘look I can swap clips around!’ and I’m looking at it with the clip connections going to myself ‘zany!’ but after the fact I wondered just how often I would invoke that kind of clip swapping global behavior, and I don’t think it’s that often. But given that clip swapping, audio avoidance and snap basically comprise the magnetic timeline, do we like that as out of the box default behavior? Should clip swapping be the default timeline behavior? Why should it?

April 25, 2011 at 1:07 am in reply to: when to invoke the magnetic timeline and what is a fragile timeline really.well….. sure, maybe the frame did, or did not offend, and maybe it was an instinctive move to slice a hair there.
If we are to suppose randy’s scenario where edits slide around each other like jello, then I’m not entirely sure I understand where the next edit decision comes from?
editing requires some deliberate, continuous clip alteration no? I’m not exactly sure I understand apple’s thinking here – I’m not sure I understand what they are protecting the editing timeline from. If the clips just slide around each other – what exactly is happening?http://www.ogallchoir.net

April 23, 2011 at 9:30 pm in reply to: in the continuing series of things read on art of the guillotine..the point you’re trying to make about developers and limited information unfinished features etc doesn’t apply – its basic information we’re talking about here – core functionality that exists in 7 and was never referenced with X. If you’re trying to imply that they’re “coding” say the XML export ten weeks before launch and that’s why they can’t talk about it – I’m going to say you’re wrong.
besides – what are these mystical ‘bounds’ and things that ‘developers cannot say’ what does that even mean? – we’re talking about some basic data points about the App – not how its encoding the linear float space – we’re talking about the ability to invoke a clip viewer and export an OMF – making grand vague points about the mysteries of development and what is “safe for them to say” (?) doesn’t answer the question at all.

and also: calling editors with misgivings mentally challenged infants might be taking things a *little* too far?
