It’s just sort of sinking in, I’m actually going to have to learn Avid, and bloody Premiere. I mean, for the love of God.

I really sort of deeply hate Apple right now – It’s all those sanctimonious Jobs walk arounds under those liberal arts and the sciences road sign banners.
Apple couldn’t give two tinkers damns about the liberal arts or the creative community – we’re just the group of people they financially feed on.

Christ, I really wish they had sold FCP now. remember those rumours?

It’s the scale of what Apple has done – they’ve killed an industry standard. The podcast makes the point that the next major release may well be two years away. And please let no one tell me apple are going to magically remember that they killed all the pro features and do a six month update to restore all the mission critical features they threw out.

This line says it all – “this is a product for people who need to edit video, but editing video is not their job”

Look at the application – just look at it – imovie media storage, imovie importing controls, imovie timeline, no custom frame rates, no custom frame sizes, no outputting XML or OMF, no RED support, no P2 support, can’t read timecode, can’t output timecode, quicktime export options are limited to pro res and H264, no custom wavs or aiff’s no controls for them at all, no multicam, no track designation, a completely ludicrous storyline, second storyline metaphor, clip collision detection is on all the time, the application runs badly in quite recent hardware, no ability to share projects, insane “see all the media and projects you’ve ever made” in the event viewer, no ability to pause or fork autosave, god it just goes on and on and on.

In short: Apple threw out an unbelievable number of mission critical professional features, and added in an endless stream of prosumer ones: auto everything on import, vastly over simplified sequence slash project setting, a fisher price timeline that’s constantly holding your hand and Facebook, Vimeo and CNN ireport at the root of the share menu.

Apple are telling us what this application is. It’s a prosumer tool. There is no volume licensing, there is no ability to backup the installer, it’s just, it’s mindbending.

They have completely screwed the broadcast and corporate editing community that spent ten years growing with the tool. FCP isn’t coming back, they didn’t forget to include all the brass tacks professional features – they dropped them. They’ll say vaguely reassuring non-commital things about it being a 1.0 application to stem the bad PR, and in a sense, they’re right, it is a 1.0 application. the broadcast, film, post production, corporate editing tool we’ve had for a decade is dead. Apple just killed it.

I shouldn’t say sociopaths, but for apple to just grin and stick the knife in so far to the creative community .. it’s mindboggling.

you know what didn’t happen when apple discontinued the floppy drive? The entire editing post house paradigm based on FCP didn’t explode in your face.

yeah, its not good tho –

“If you add or move a clip in the Timeline by dragging, Final Cut Pro moves other clips to make room for it.”

You can pop a clip up to the secondary short story poem line (that used to be V2) – but what FCPX does then is place an emergency slug in its place on the main story timeline – the new rules of loony gravity can’t be broken – there can be no spaces. This weird pop up and slug fill operation is a leftover allowance for more sophisticated editing operations – how many times have you purposely left a five second hole and then started sliding wee clips into it to see where they could go? casually seeing black in an edit is pretty important I think – its where you can see the next shots.
Apple haven’t figured anything new out – Randy has lobotomised the application under orders to hoover up the casual media generator.

FCPs default behaviour and configuration is for a pro-am imovie user to wander in and start pressing buttons. This app is definitively not built for pros. the new way to edit is to edit if you didn’t really know how, and the software will try to keep the show on the road.

a timeline in continuous swap mode that you can’t turn off is a good thing? seriously?

  • please stop telling me I’m trolling because I really amn’t – I’m expressing justified irritation. Enough with the trolling shoutout. At that rate I’d tell you that you were passively aggressively trolling – well known phenomenon of repeatedly jumping up and down on someone’s points while calling them out as a troll 😉

[Chris Kenny] “The solution to that seems to be connecting clips. If the magnetic timeline could throw specific clips out of alignment that needs to remain in alignment, you just connect them, and they’ll maintain the same relative relationship.”

That’s a pretty hilarious sentence. so if I move a clip, to stop things going to hell, what do i connect? all the various components of the entire 25 minute downstream edit? How on gods earth does it make any sense from a professional standpoint to have a timeline in continuous swap mode that can’t be turned off?

    It’s a joke.

but jesus I hate Avid, I really hate using it. I’ve been FCP only since 3.0

    damn you Apple.

  • Who am I trolling Chris? Apple? I’m annoyed is what I am.

Anyway – you didn’t read what I said – It’s what Apple chose to present FCPX as – I’m not arguing it doesn’t have mind numbing lists of metadata. It’s how they’re pitching the product, and who it’s intended for. Did you hear? you can’t turn the magnetic timeline off apparently.

  • [Chris Kenny] “But FCP X provides tools explicitly for the purpose of doing this sort of thing in a single timeline. For instance, you can group all the shots in a scene into a compound clip (basically a less screwy nested sequence), and then duplicate it as an audition, which lets you easily swap different versions of it into and out of your main sequence.

Basically, FCP X does support multiple sequences in a project, but it drops support for multiple top-level sequences in favor of support for better hierarchical organization of sequences.”

ah whatever.. I want multiple timelines that exist as independent entities in the browser that I can name. That’s gone, and that’s total sh*te.

We had that feature before the lobotomy – and so farewell to it. I’m loving the fact that a deleted clip item in the browser now sends the corresponding finder item to the trash. If true, that is a deliciously, aggressively stupid move. Its basically Apple whipping out the megaphone and saying – “this software is as conceptually sophisticated as itunes, have fun, you crazy teenagers, with your one rad project/timeline/event/whatever b*llocks we’re calling it now/ slicing and dicing that CNN’s ireport you’re editing in your dorm room”

Look at all the promo material – they’re basically saying this thing is good for a three minute sizzle reel of cars being driven.

  • but chris, for god’s sake I can’t even ‘save as’ anymore. The moronic software is relentlessly autosaving on top of itself like a maniac. I need to be able to fork and park the file saving at points.

And multiple timelines are not a cludge. They’re an important part of iterating different conceptions of the edit.

This software has had a full frontal lobotomy. It may be stronger, leaner, gaudier, faster, but a large part of its brain just went missing.
