“I’m curious, are most people just exporting in their native HD resolutions and using Squeeze to down-convert the exported file to SD?”
Justin, to be honest with you i don’t know the answer to that since i’ve never used squeeze to achieve the downconvert with letterbox, in the Avid you can also transcode HD to SD but it stills gives you anamorphic and then you have to apply the reformat effect which at the end is an extra step and doesn’t make any sense to me in terms of time. I’d also like to know what people is doing to address this
cheers

Hey Justin, hope you still need this: drop the REFORMAT 16:9 letter box on your footage in the timeline and export with your regular 720×486 (without the letterbox option or anything else)i know it sound crazy but it works i do it all the time…takes longer to export though.

Thanks Zane for your response…..here’s the part of the story i forgot to tell you (cause’ i didn’t think it was relevant) my problem was created by an automatic update called “security 2008-008” from the apple site, not only made my computer crash but also created a panic kernel, so be aware of this problem….seems that i you save the installer and run the update from your computer nothing happens but if you run in from the apple site chances are your hard drive is going to get screwed if you guys want to find out for yourselves here’s a thread

Tim, many thanks for your response you certainly hit the spot, i could not agree more that this is crazy post world these days and the way you describe the io as the “swiss army knife” is just perfect, you can even dig in DVDs thru the SVideo input! and like you i don’t think i will need uncompressed HD, dual link and 4:4:4 for now, so that being said i have decided to go with the ioHD done deal…Now i’m just looking at my storage options and then i’ll dive right in and buy the io. Thanks again

Hey Jeremy thanks for your response you certainly cleared those points for me….by the way i saw your story about how you used the ioHd in a project…..very cool stuff!

Thanks Paul (that’s what i wanted to hear) and thanks everyone else for your responses, see how beautiful life can be making love instead of war, who would imagine both editing platforms living under the same roof a few years ago!!! they might even get married in the near future who knows… and have children……ok ok i just got carried away i still like my fcp better than the avid at work jejeje

Hey Todd, first and foremost thanks for your response….you actually brought a couple of good points one is i don’t want to mix and match projects between the 2 apps that’s exactly one of the reasons i’d like to have them both to avoid the automtatic duck route and instead deal with projects accordingly: fcp to fcp and avid to avid without crossing apps…..does it make sense?
I couldn’t agree more with you on the second point, the trend nowadays is to cut online once and for all since storage is somehow cheap but unfortunately in the editing world is inevitable that you’ll get or have to hand out projects in the editing platform you don’t have or cut something your client wants to online on a better finishing system….maybe i’m asking for too much but i’m just evaluating my options outhere, and i know that at the end this is possible it might not be so common but there’s people who has done it.
thanks again.

Thanks a lot Dave, that’s what i wanted to hear. I’ve been doing just that when rendering out of AE,just wanted to double check i’m doing it right and also to find out if i’m covering every aspect of the graphic(s) (leves of gray, gradiations, thin lines etc) by using a luma track matte. I often get graphics on video tape with the fill and matte separately then i’m asked to marry them in a quicktime movie for post houses. cheers
