I should also note that the bad capturing appeared not to have affected the image at all, only sound.

So I got spooked by the original DV-avi file size and compressed them to mpegs. I went back to the original dv-avis (which were occasionally too long because I left the VCR/ADVC running), trimmed them up, and used them (in all their 28Gig glory) and the syncing was better than ever.

I noticed vegas could much more accurately sync the audio-video with those files than the original old mpgs I was given before I recaptured the tapes. Also, the ADVC gave me a way larger audio ceiling – there was clipping all over the place on the old mpegs I was given (captured straight from a VCR with USB), audio was in general much cleaner as well.

    Good news:

I found a ADVC-300 at a major metro area I happened to be visiting for $60. Then she dropped the price to $30. Agreed to hold it for me for my trip then gave it to me for $20. Estate sale lady who didn’t know what she had on her hands, apparently.

It cleaned up 90% of the wobble in my tapes and also gave me a clearer picture across the board. And now I can sell it!

Thanks guys – did a bunch of research on TBC…seems like a lot of options (scalers, VCRs with it built-in and then converting from that) but none of them at a price point I can make because of the rarity of VHS these days.

I started looking into VHS digitization services, which do seem to be reasonably-priced. But the first one I emailed asking if they have TBC on their machines replied that they can’t tell me. Duh!

Does anybody have a recommended service for this?

  • Roger, thanks for the behind the head tip, I haven’t utilized that much.

Also – I’m not sure if this was clear: I’ll have two cameras AND two shooters.

Graham, so are you emphasizing the targeted text with contrast, blur, etc. Or are you de-emphasizing the background text? I’m assuming the latter.

    thanks for the suggestion

I’m wondering: is there any sort of external video splitter/labeling/organizing program that people use for cataloging footage? I don’t actually need to do anything in vegas until I’m making scenes.
