    It was given away on 3D World, but the plugin requires registration. AFAIK it’s not okay to redistribute it.

    What is it you want to do with ngons? You can create them by melting edges, or with the create polgyon tool.

    You could use sweeps; just use Structure>Edit Spline>Create Outline to give your crossections “thickness”.

    Another option would be to model it without thickness and then select all polys and extrude with “Create Caps” checked (R9+). If you’re using an earlier version of Cinema you can get a plugin called “Make Thicker” (free).

    I’m not being flippant here–IMO the best way to learn the program is to read the manual front to back. It would probably help to get a few DVDs to give you some context (and more fun) too. I recommend all of the offerings at 3DFluff.com. There’s also a good beginner/intermediate book by Anne Powers, which I think was reviewed on this site. That should help you hit the ground running.
