Yeah there’s an ad in the new Creative Cow magazine this month and I’d love to know this too.

The other posters have described the problem. I purchased a Tiffen T1 IR filter and haven’t looked back. No more brownish/reddish blacks!

    Here’s a video I made showing its effects: https://vimeo.com/7823593

Do not capture clips you’ve recorded to memory cards through HD-SDI. It may be neglibible quality loss but it’d be a waste of time/storage space. That plus the files are higher quality, again only slightly but at least storage space.

However, if you are recording a LIVE HD-SDI stream to the io HD then the benefits are 10-bit 4:2:2 and a higher bitrate with ProRes. For green screen work this would help out a lot. If I were shooting a big movie this is the route I’d go because the footage will probably be color corrected/graded heavily.

But for all else shooting to the memory cards and transferring via USB is fine.

I have a EX1/Sennheiser G2 setup. The transmission range is really good…500 feet at least. I haven’t run into many issues with either the clip on transmitter or the plug-in transmitter.

With any wireless gear you don’t want to have the attenaes closer than I think 3 or 4 feet…it says something in the manual.

What frequency range is your gear in?

You also need to use Sennheiser’s website and see if you aren’t interferring with any radio/TV frequencies. All cities have different setups so you need to get this info before your shoot.

    https://12.148.18.149/ is the Sennheiser site.

During one event I kept getting static. Even though my cell phone’s frequency isn’t near my wireless gear’s range, I turned it off. For the rest of the event, no more interference. Coincidence?

Also…always use fresh batteries. This can’t be said enough.

I have owned an EX1 for close to two years now. There hasn’t been a situation it couldn’t handle. The HQ format passes Discovery Channel standards (a big reason I bought it) and it has HD-SDI out to a Nanoflash if a higher data rate is needed for a broadcaster.

The audio in the camera is great. The resolution is tack sharp. The LCD screen resolution is enough for critical focusing. Lowlight performance is best in class. The only flaws for me are ergonomics (correctable with a shoulder mount), viewfinder resolution (Hoodman EX Loupe solves this) and the Jell-O effect if you pan too fast.

The EX1 has plenty of user reviews, which I find to be the most honest. The Canon may have magazine writer reviews but those tend to be biased. I’m not saying the Canon is a lesser camera–it may in fact be better– but for a newer camera you’re taking a risk.

If I were you I would hold out and wait for the “guinea pigs” to report back on their honest findings.
