Hmm, I watched the tutorial video that was on the linked Adobe page and I noticed that I hadn’t been checking the box for “AAF Edit Protocol.” I did this and this time I had more success. The project itself came through, but it’s a mixed bag with how they actually work. The video and audio are there, but my text and still photo layers aren’t showing up, and it’s having some issues with things that have a matte key involved. Most of the problem layers show a “Media Pending” error in the preview window. What does that mean and how do I fix it? Thanks!

Thanks for all that. I’ve copied some of the most important things you said into my notes. I’ve never had anything rejected by QC here, so I’ll just worry about keeping things between the lines for right now.

We’re using Avid Media Composer 6.0.1.1. My predecessors at this job apparently didn’t care to update the software, even the bug fixes. When I looked into doing it, I learned that you can apparently only be so far behind on patches before they require you to fully uninstall the software and reinstall a newer version, which I considered far too risky. My employers agreed with that.

So I’ve told the videoographer and he said:

“The XDCAM and XAVC standards have 8 tracks of audio, you cannot turn them off, it’s part of the system standard. The empty tracks do not use up any significant amounts of data (almost zero).”

Is he right? That seems to be the opposite of what everyone is saying here. As mentioned upthread, the camera is a Sony FS7.

If he’s wrong, how does he turn them off?

Thanks for this. I’ve had the chance to take a look at the camera and it’s indeed a Sony FS7. I’ll forward a link to this thread to the videographer to see if there’s a setting he can change.

One of the file folders is labeled “XDROOT,” so it must be something like XDCAM. (Shooting is done by someone else who’s out today, so I don’t know all the details of this new camera).

That seems to have done the trick, although I had to relink the files by right-clicking them highlighted in the bin and selecting “Link to AMA files” instead of clicking “Relink” like the PDF in your blog said.

So anyway, this does work, but it would mean I have to do it again for every new batch of video. Are there any other methods?

I downloaded the AJA app and it says I have a write speed of 73.9 MB/s and a read speed of 82.8 MB/s. Our old machine that doesn’t have many problems writes at 92.2 MB/s and reads at 90.5 MB/s.

This review says the 5D is “aimed primarily at creative professionals (such as photo and video editors).”

This reviewer using a Mac (and presumably a Thunderbolt connector) was able to hit write speeds around 145MB/s and read speeds of just over 240MB with an mSATA SSD card (similar to the one I’m thinking about getting) and 130 MB/s write speeds and 170 MB/s read speeds without.

So…get the card, I guess?

Oh hey, I managed to make this work by opening the clips on the timeline in the Title Tool (via Effect Editor), and then doing a Save As, and giving them the same name and putting them in the same bin as before.
