Yeah that was the problem. However the Mac I was using was so old that it just kept crashing and having to stop due to dropped frames.
I managed to get my hands on a Firewire to Thunderbolt connection to use on my new computer, but for some reason FCP on that computer didn’t detect the camera o_o

So I’ve given up and decided to use iMovie, seems far more simple (basically all I had to do was press “Import” and seeing as I have to bring in the entirety of all the tapes the basic setup of iMovie isn’t really an issue.

Thanks for all your help Steve!

    Hi Steve,

I ended up trying Final Cut Pro 7 before you responded, however it’s been stuck on “Cueing Source Material” for the past hour and it’s only 10 minutes of footage, so I’ll probably have to abandon that. I don’t really have the time or funds to order the Elgato or BlackMagic Intensity Shuttle unfortunately.

I’ve tried looking up how to do it via Quicktime but I can only find a clearly explanation on how to do it with Quicktime 7 and I have 10. Do you know what the process is for doing it with Quicktime 10?

    Hi Steve,

Thanks for the response. Thankfully we have a Sony Z1 so extracting it via a camera should be fine. In your experience, what was generally the best program to do it through? There seems to be various recommendations online.

I’m aware that my Mac monitor would display things different to say, what the monitor showed when it was being graded. I guess my logic was that what I saw on my Avid window should be similar to what I’m seeing through Quicktime, though I wasn’t aware that Quicktime changed how it can look. Nor that it was so variable across different programs.

It’s just a bit of a shame that it feels like it’s going to be a lottery as to whether it will be visible or not depending on what it’s screened on. If it becomes a major issue I guess revisiting the grade might be the option.

Thank you anyway, it’s good to know that I’m not making a major error during the export.

I AMA-link them all and the only one that stayed the same was the “Same as Source” export. Though when I open it up separately it still seems to be much darker. It’s very odd. Do you know what might be going wrong on the system?

I forgot to point out that what you’re seeing in Avid is AMA-Linked to a ProRes 4444 file which came from grading. Don’t know if that changes anything to how I should be approaching this.

I’m exporting from an OS, Yosemite 10.10. This is probably my ignorance speaking but I don’t see how it can be that dark when the graded file is way lighter?

It was originally an .srt file, but I imported it into Belle Nuit and then exported it as a .txt file. Was the same either way.
Thank you for the offer but I’ve now corrected everything and have what I need to make any further files.

    I’m not sure about that?
If it were milliseconds then at some point it would have gone above 50, which it never did. There were over 1000 subtitles so I highly doubt it was by luck that it never went above that. Avid also specifically wouldn’t import anything that was above 25, so for example, 10:01:35:26 would have been rejected. It was only after I had adjusted those that did to be 25 or under that it accepted them.

So yes, as Michael pointed out, the issues revolved around the timecode being set to 50fps. Couldn’t find a way to adjust the timecode in Belle Nuit so had to go through the arduous process of correcting everything in the .txt file manually. There was also the issue of some subtitles ending after the next one was scheduled to begin, which Avid also didn’t like.

Not sure why this was the case or how it wasn’t noticed before, especially considering the original .srt file is almost 4 years old. But it’s all sorted now though. Thanks again everyone for the help!
