What do you use to edit? If you use final cut, avid, or premiere you can just import the clip and export it to something other than an AVCHD file.
Otherwise, you could try handbrake. It was originally made for DVD ripping but it has evolved.

As for accessories, I’d get a circular polarizer for shooting as flat as an image as possible for color grading. For stabilization I’d get a steadycam such as the Glidecam HD 2000. A typical Equipped XA 10 ways about 2.2 pounds. For batteries do WASABI, they are way cheaper and much more cost effective.
