  • I finally got what I wanted. The SM, reluctantly (and referencing that it will be a pretty major rigging job for his crew) agreed to fly my grid over the audience in the optimum location for imaging from the stage and ambience from the hall.

    I am very pleased with this development, as it means we are going to achieve sonic exellence in this recording, not to mention the whole thing being shot in HD.

    My concession is that I’ll supply them with aircraft cable, turnbuckles and Crosby clips to do the hanging. I already sent them drawings and dimensions with weight info. I ordered a longer set of cables to feed from the array. Hopefully all parts arrive before this coming Wednesday. Looks like I’ll be making 3 trips to the hall to do pre-rigging, then hookup and audio testing, and finally to record the concert. This is me at my very best. 🙂

    I’d say, based on all that I have read about this model, that it is poised to create a virtual avalanche in the camera market for lightweight HD cams. Sony must be trying to head off the Silicon Imaging and Red One offerings, which are super cameras at absurdly-low prices.

    So far, the still images that have been posted from this model seem degraded and not compelling. I am waiting for some raw footage to play with and evaluate. But based on the specs, it looks like it solves every problem that faces event videographers and indie filmmakers.

    This camera is poised to be the new darling of the indie film industry. I just hope Sony doesn’t screw around with pricing. We’re definately going to purchase a number of these. I wish I had them right now for a symphony concert we’re covering this month.

    I think we could better assist you if we had some information about the project settings and the colors involved.

    For instance, a DV video project uses the DV rendering CODEC, and if your text uses intense primary colors, then the 4:1:1 subsampling of the render CODEC would surely make your text look ragged around the edges.

    What colors are you using? What project setup? Resolution, etc?

    I too, have this same situation–if I move a “window” onto the Vizio monitor, it displays at full resolution of 1920×1080 (the native resolution of this “FullHD” monitor). If I instead use the Premiere feature to send output to “1080P 60” monitor, I get a 1080P sync rate on the monitor, but every scanline repeated twice, effectively reducing it.

    Now there is something interesting in the nVidia Control Panel under “Change flat panel scaling”:

    Native resolution: 1280×720
    Current resolution: 1920×1080

    The native resolution may be reported incorrectly by the monitor, if the nVidia driver is not at fault. It could be a firmware issue. I think this may be a holdover from the VGA port on the Vizio, which IS limited to 1366×768, according to the manual. However, the HDMI port uses the full resolution. So I use the HDMI port through an adapter cable. And it works fine for everything but Premiere. I’m guessing that the Vizio just reports the “native resolution” to the PC based on the VGA port, since they didn’t expect the HDMI to be connected to PC. But lots of folks were doing that successfully for HTPCs and I decided to buy based on that, as well as other factors.

    The monitor itself is a 2.2 megapixel display. That’s why we bought it, because at the time, that many pixels cost $4K on a display that size. Everything else out there was 1366×768 and looked like a window screen was in front of those other displays.

    Interestingly, I get full resolution when I drag any desktop client video window to the Vizio monitor, but it is only Premiere that can’t seem to do it. Despite Premiere seeing the 2nd monitor as “1080P 60”.

    Go figure….

    I have done two tests which provide compelling evidence that the information you have is wholely inaccurate:

    1. Dropped primary screen resolution to 1920×1080. Driving both screens at this lower resolution, Premiere still doubles lines on the preview monitor.

    2. Ran nView setup to route 2 independant media player instances to 2 monitors, each running full-screen, #1 at 2560×1600 and #2 at 1920×1080 (max supported by mon #2). Two DIFFERENT videos played to two different monitors at full screen and FULL resolution, no jaggies, no dropped frames.

    This, in my estimation, is CLEAR evidence that the 8800GTS CAN output two independant streams and full resolution to both outputs. So I conclude that the problem is a Premiere issue and not a hardware limitation with the 8800GTS.

    BTW, 1920×1080=2,073,600 pixels and 2560×1600=4,096,000 pixels, approximately DOUBLE that of HDTV 1080P.

  • Neraly every asset brought into Scenarist has a long filename. Naturally, Scenarist adds a “_1” or whatever, making them even longer. But for years we’ve used long filenames, though I try to keep mine shorter to aid in identifying files of similar beginning name, without problems.

    The error at the end of MUXing only happens when we recycle a scenario and use it as a template for another project. I think there is some vestige of old data that is no longer valid for the new scenario that may be to blame here, but I can’t so far pinpoint what exactly that may be or how to fix it. The scenarios make a working image, and the audio problem I discovered in one of the multiplexed images was due to the fact that the audio track was somehow set for a shorter end time than the video. I could have sworn I fixed that, but when I explicitly fixed it, that solved the audio silencing after 5 minutes.

    Other than the “cannot create DVD files” error at the end of MUXing, the image burns and plays fine.

    If we make a new project from scratch, this error does not appear. Would sure like to figure out why templates have this issue. Having to build every scenario from scratch is time-consuming and seems wasteful, when we’re dealing with many titles that use the same layout.

    Gene,

    I might be inclined to believe in the limitation you are talking about, if I were asking for 2560 by 1600 out of BOTH ports–but I’m only asking for half resolution out the second port.

    One of the reasons why we upgraded from the GeForce 4600 on our old NLE was because the second port only did 1280 by 720 for some reason. That card only had 128MB RAM on board.

    I wanted to make sure that limitation would not occur in our new system, so we pretty much overbuilt it, and I had to justify the purchase of a GeForce 8800 over a card costing 1/4 the price.

    I still think the problem is somewhere else. If the resolution were lower, the Viz would diplay a different rate, not 1080P 60Hz.

    The concert is about two weeks away and I’ve just gotten an e-mail from the stage manager. As expected, they have a problem with our proposed microphone setup.
    What they offered us was totally unacceptable–a single microphone hung over the audience with 1/8″ aircraft cable.

    Kinda’ hard to do 5-channel surround sound with one mic. 😉

    The only other thing he offered was to put mics in the balconey. Just how flexible they will be with WHERE and HOW MANY mics, is yet to be determined.

    I was thinking that, if they are flexible enough, it might be possible to still create a “reasonable” facscimile of surround from the balcony, with a spaced stereo pair of cardioides about 30′ apart and aimed directly at the stage, plus a center mic in the middle, and a second pair, spaced similarly, but aiming up at the ceiling for the surround rear channels.

    What would you folks do in this situation, based on the assumption that you won’t compromise your recording? Would you work with the balconey mics, or would you bow out of the recording contract?

    Gene,
    Can you point me to where you read the specs that say that this card cannot output full resolution on both DVI ports? Because I bought it based on the understanding that it could output 2560×1600 out of BOTH ports simultaneously, in case I wanted to drive two monitors. 640MB of frame buffer ought to be enough to drive 53 monitors at that resolution, in theory.
    I went with the GTS over a plain-Jane 128MB vanilla card specifically for this reason, so I’d be shocked and dismayed if this were true.
