    The 6770 is basically just a 5770 and should work just fine with GPU enabled.

    Did you do any of the tests I recommended in your last post on this topic?

    If you are going to upgrade that i7-3770 and stick with HD codecs:

    I would look at replacing the 8GB of memory with a 32GB matched set(4x8GB with all the same chips and timing) You need to determine the Chipset you have, as the H67,P67,H77 all use DDR3-1333, while the H77-Z77 can use up to DDR3-1600.

    Replace the PSU with 500W or better, more if you have several HHD and not SSD.

    GPU – 7970 used, R9 290x/390x(same card)

    Multi-monitor – I run 3 monitors on a 5770, but have to utilize the 2 DVI and the Display port with a dongle converter to HDMI. The cards above should all support multi monitors, but you may need adapters if your monitors are old.

    You say you would like longevity on a new system, I would wait for Skylake (i7-6000 series) and DDR4 systems to emerge, then add a 390 Fury X or whatever AMD has similar at the time. There are big changes ahead for Vegas, so this suggestion is based on where Vegas is currently at.

    You would need a Xeon on system to meet the specs Vegas currently lists for 4K. The 8 core count is physical cores and not 4 cores with hyper-thread.

    Codecs matter on how well Vegas does timeline playback. Converting h264.MTS or .MoV from the camera to something like XDCAM-EX, HDCAM-SR, or SR-Lite. If uploading to YouTube, render XDCAM-EX and upload directly. This way you do not have to mess with figuring out the right lowest bit-rate that looks good on YT.

    With 4k on the hero black, convert to XAVC.mxf. Best to do this with the project mode in FP 32-bit Video levels.

    Vegas 13 is more stable than VP12 in my opinion.

    I agree with John’s comment on the cost of 4k.

    I would also argue that consumer cameras are not 4K, they are just HD cameras with higher resolution. 4k is about 4096×2160-60p, Rec2020, capturing in at least 10-bit color, Intra-frame, and with a bit rate of >100Mbs. When TV manufacturers release 4K displays, they need to release a camera capable of shooting a picture for that display. This is not for pro shooter reasons, but to appease the guy that bought a 4k TV, and now wants 4k home videos of his kids.

    I have edited 4k on my Gen1 i7-870, but the workflow is strictly HD proxy editing, with CC done by disabling the display scaling and using Pan&crop to see 1:1 zoomed view of the 4k image. The rendering time is not that bad and comparable to HD editing, adding time for the 4x resolution.

    Yep this is good way to do scan your pages. Get or build a copy stand, and shoot them RAW, tweak, and export at uncompressed TIF for inclusion on the timeline. Make sure to use greater than a 35mm for APS-C, and 50mm for full frame. You do not want your text fish eyeing from a wide angle lens.

    This was the only way to get that type of media into a documentary before NLEs. Filmmakers like Ken Burns would use a robotic copy stand to move the camera across photos and news print, while capturing to tape or film.

    Polarizing your lights and another on the lens, allows you copy a textured surface like a painting or will reduce glint on shiny ink.

    HD6700 what? 6750, 6770, 6790?

    The 6770 like the 5770 are the minimum spec for GPU, per the Vegas 11 release notes. 1GB minimum on the GPU, and 12 Compute cores (800 Stream Processors) The 6770 and 5770 are almost identical with the exception that the 1GB 6770 used slower memory. They 67700 should function as GPU Timeline and render acceleration.

    The 6750 might not do as well, since it has one less compute unit and operates at a slower clock speed.

    There have been other posts in the past on getting GPU working in vegas that details out steps to try.

    I would try the following:

    Make sure windows is fully updated, reboot.

    Run Ccleaner and the reg cleaner associated.

    Run Windows Disk sweeper and clear systems files like update and old windows versions. Reboot.

    Rescan for updates and apply if any come up. reboot if updates applied.

    Make sure your AMD driver is up to date with the latest for the 6700.
    Optional: I install the AMD SKD which has OpenCL development capabilities, just incase the core driver was not tested well with OpenCL. The SDK will make sure all components are installed to develop OpenCL apps.

    Check your system for OpenCL operation CPU+GPU with an application like Luxrender V2.

    Use GPU-Z to verify that your GPU is operating at the max PCIe x16 speed. Most likely PCIe 2.0 x16 on a i7-2600.

    Make sure GPU is enabled in Vegas Preferences, and the render template you are using. This would be Auto, GPU if available, GPU, or OpenCL for AMD cards. There is a TEST GPU button in Vegas render profiles that attempts to see if the system sees both CPU+GPU OpenCL configuration.

    AMD System Monitor is a good tool to watch GPU utilization during playback and rendering. Switching your project as a test to Floating Point 32-bit full, and rendering a test, should create a high GPU utilization. If this is the case, your GPU is assisting.

    Next you may want to verify your system is not overheating during render. Use an app like Speccy to verify they CPU, GPU, and chipsets remain below 70C. If they exceed 70C you need to repair the heat sink issues.

    Lastly, certain codecs function better than others in Vegas. Run some test by converting your source footage to XDCAM-EX, XDCAM422, or HDCAM SR Lite, and replacing your source footage in the timeline. You can do this by having all your source footage in a folder, rename that folder, open vegas, and point vegas at the new replacement files.

    UCLA Extension used to have some good courses taught by ASC DPs. I would check around some of the camera houses like Otto, Panavision, Clairmont, and see if anyone knows of something like that.

  • I use a pair of D5100s with hacked firmware for greater bit rates, and manual controls. You want the highest bitrate for high motion like biking.

    If you get a hold of firmware with higher bitrates, you may need to upgrade your SD card so it will keep up with the new recording speed.

    For a video that is biker motion, I would stick to 1080-30P. If you shoot 24p to align with film standards, make sure to use plenty of ND and or pola combos to get the exposure down to near 50th of sec. If you use shutter control to shed light, you can end up with a lot of strobe in the motion. Film look is actually low frame rate with bluring of the image due to low shutter speed.

    I would stick to a 4-5.6 with most lenses. If you use heavy NDs in sunny conditions to make that stop, you may want to consider using a Hot Mirror and UV filter to cut the extra heat the ND filters are not blocking. To much IR on the sensor can create color issues.

    The native ISO of the Nikon sensor is not as clearly documented as Canon devices. I have read that the native ISO is 100, I find iso 100 to have to much contrast, and so would put the native iso at about 200 or 320. The 7100 is the same sensor I believe.

    Basically I would set the camera up this way using the stock firmware.

    Shutter – 30th or 60th
    F/T-stop – 4 plus ND
    Format: 1080-30p – HQ
    Image Profile: Portrait
    Active Lighting: off

    Have you looked at Sony Ci and Sony Catalyst Prepare or Edit. What you are asking for is sort of the market that Sony is attempting to fill with these products.

    The Microsoft and Adobe applications are probably not keeping you from applying the latest build. Are you installing drivers on your laptop, or running the windows10 defaults?

    On my Win10 VM, the latest builds are never a problem. On my old laptop where I applied a couple down level device drivers to Win10, I would have build upgrade issues. Since then I do not apply any device drivers other than the SD card reader.

    Have you selected Fast Ring for your builds, a couple builds below 10240 were pretty unstable with 3rd party apps and drivers.

    I would try and uninstall all 3rd party device drivers 1st before rolling back, and get your build up to at least 10240. 10240 seems really stable.

    Norm is right. Convert all of your .MTS footage to XDCAM-EX.mxf. If you cannot not play that format back, then you need to consider a new hardware configuration.

    Vegas can play the role of batch render tool with the right script that comes with Vegas. Search for other threads on batch scripting.

    Some file containers and codecs are more optimized to edit in Vegas. h264.MTS, h264.MOV, DNxHD.MOV these formats are not optimized under Vegas, and people post endlessly on the problems. For editing intermediates, and workflow simplicity, stick with codecs that Vegas renders as .MXF.

    Laptops with mobile chipsets are generally 1/2 the compute power of desktop versions with the same numbers. This is great hardware manufacturer con of the last 10-15 years. Most people think that games are the hardcore app, and video editing is a light duty application that can run on any gaming system. The opposite is actually the truth.

    @Norm – h.263(Dvix)- you should look at Dvix today, they are well past h.263, and have been one of the 1st h.265 systems for some time now. The .MKV container still limits peoples wide acceptance of the format.
