We use an Eizo monitor on our Flame….. have to say it’s mind blowingly accurate for an LCD. So much so that, really, you almost don’t need a $60,000 sony CRT for color.

JVC has some decent monitors for the price – we had rented one on evaluation not too long ago – the 24″. Color balance and contrast were well calibrated. Get it with the HD-SDI input and feed it from the Kona card – problem solved.

So you’re sure there’s only 24fps on the Digibeta – so that it looks like it’s running fast when you play it back? because digibeta must run at 29.97, and very few video systems use that 24fps on a digibeta trick.
Then in that case, capture everything as 29.97 fps into FCP, and then have Cinema Tools conform the frame rate of your clips to 23.98 without doing any pulldown conversions.

nope. h.264 is a delivery codec…
Save yourself the technical aches and pains – just buy some big FW drives and edit in native HDV, or whatever the camera you choose shoots.

G5 has 4GB RAM, and I mainly work from G-Tech FW800 drives and our XSAN over fibre…. so it’s pretty speedy on the storage end.
Most of my speed tests were using Shake or CS3. I connected my Macbook to the Xsan via gigabit, so the G5 still had a slight advantage… but in Shake the macbook easily outran my G5 2:1

I’m with you there. Unless you have lots of graphics or gradients, 8 bit will usually work beautifully.

My 2.4Ghz Macbook Pro is roughly twice as fast as my Dual G5 2.5

I’ve always been a huge fan of the Panasonic codecs… we offline edit all our SD work in DV-50. 1st generation from a digibeta – the stuff looks exceptionally good and that 4:2:2 colorspace makes keying a little cleaner.

I’d just start calling around the post-production rental companies in LA (well, mostly the valley and Burbank). look in la411.com. They might not have it, but most of them are really friendly and will give you suggestions….
Of couse you could pick up a pair of 16TB G-Speed fibre arrays for 40k, and charge them against the project.
