Ah, gotcha. I was hoping there was a quicker/easier way to do it than that but sometimes you just need to put in the time. I appreciate all the help.

Yes! More or less like that. What did you do for the mini hexes?

I tried out CC HexTile already. It’s useful, but not really for this instance. At least not as far as my experiments took me. I’m pretty intermediate in my AE capabilities.

I found a texture online of the hex grid and was hoping I could attach it to the black hex and have it repeated as well. It isn’t vector-based.

As a work around, I put created a shape layer for the small grid of hexes and laid it over the large hexes in my pre-comp. Then I used a duplicate of the black hexes as a track matte. The outer hex (blue) and the inner hex (black) are both on repeaters. It works, but if I say want each hex to be identical, then it doesn’t.

I can’t seem to create a hex grid in the shape of a hexagon and repeat it in this fashion. I’m sure it’d be 10x easier to create in Illustrator (and less processor heavy) but I’m now on a mission to find the best way to do it in AE. Here’s the current look:

  • Thanks guys. I did discover yesterday what you shared about saving only certain takes in the AVCHD file structure which makes me feel better about editing that way. I’ll try to conform audio and then select takes and see where that gets me. Just seems like an extra step that shouldn’t be necessary in a log and cap program.

Just for curiosity sake, how does FCP handle AVCHD considering you don’t need to conform audio?

  • That’s great news, Todd! Thanks for responding. Do you have any idea when that will be released?

  • I ended up trashing the ProApps System ID as well after I read something somewhere else. That did bring up the Registration screen the next time I booted FCP, but once I entered in the info I got an instant Protection Error. ARGH!

  • Well, I located the key and trashed it. My FCP still comes up with the serial number though and goes straight to Protection Error. I’m afraid it’s come down to a reinstall. Thanks for the help. Any other suggestions anyone?

Hmmm, I tried something similar to this. I’m looking more for him to turn into smoke rather than disappear into smoke if that makes any sense.

Thanks for the input though. My other problem is that all the smoke particle generators in Motion seem really tacky. I’m not that well-versed at adjusting them, but I haven’t been able to find a smoke I’m happy with.

I’m basically trying to do something like this, but in Motion:

So, the issue is I’m starting a new position at a non-profit (meaning they aren’t going to buy software). I’ll look into the printer and see if we have any label software connected to it (based on the organization of the computer I inherited, I doubt it). They used Disc Label which is an awful program and we no longer have access to it. Thankfully.

@Noah: I couldn’t agree with you more, but the computer doesn’t have any Adobe programs besides acrobat.

@Michael: Why no label? This is the way the company has always done it, and the DVDs are primarily for archival purposes. If there’s a harmful effect of sticky labels, I may be able to persuade them against it. Otherwise, not worth fighting.
