I also have had trouble using Catalyst Browse, my Media 100 edit system didn’t like the ProRes files it produced for some obscure reason. I have just turned to EditReady which I find fantastic. Easier to use, does a great job, the only snag is that there is no facility for ‘in’ and ‘out’ points for selection, you have to transcode the whole clip.
There is a free trial offer if anyone is curious and wants to have a look, I’ve now bought it, $49, worth it as my problems are, I hope, over.

Bob, as a matter of interest, why did you upgrade your Catalyst Browse? I’m just embarking on this software since I hope soon to be shooting in the Sony XAVC codec and my old Transfer won’t deal with that.

Jim, you are doing just what we were expressly told not to do with the BPAV folders produced when shooting with the EX 1 camera. We were warned that disaster would follow if we split the items in those folders.
Are you saying that things are different now with the Z150? Are the XAVC folders able to be split up and clips selected separately? In any case I intend to use the Sony Catalyst Browse for selecting but your method intrigues me.

I am just about to change to this camera from my EX 1 and have installed Sony Catalyst Browse in order to be able to read and deal with the files. I would think that you have to do the same, you are probably shooting in the new Sony Codec, XAVC which needs the Catalyst Browse. I don’t know how the other guys got their stuff from this camera into Final Cut.

Just installed version 2.1.7 and no, I don’t get the outline of a clip when dragging to a programme, just the hand icon, quite annoying. With the outline you can see the head of a clip and it is therefore easier to place. I wonder why they left that out?

Tom, I think that Sony Catalyst Browse is free. Without it people filming in the Sony codecs, XDCAM, XAVC etc couldn’t access the media. I think that you might need a 10 OS but I’m not sure. I always used Transfer for reading my media from the S X S cards in my EX1, and it was perfect for me. I’m hoping that Catalyst Browse is as good for the XAVC codec that I’ll be shooting on although I’ve tested it with XDCAM media and it works for that too.

Thanks Andrew, not unduly alarmed but I don’t want any nasty surprises when I upgrade to Yosemite and possibly Media 100 Suite 2.1.7 (from 2.1.5).
I’m now shooting Progressive so the de interlacing factor won’t arise. Thanks for your advice.

Andrew, I’m really worried about something that you’ve said about QT Export from Media 100. You thought that the new OS (anyone after Leopard), has affected the QT export function in Media 100. I’m just upgrading (?) to Yosemite from Mountain Lion, merely so I can install and use Sony Catalyst Browse for converting files shot in the Sony XAVC codec which my proposed new camera will shoot in. Hitherto I’ve had really good quality exports as QT ProRes 422 HQ .mov files. Will I not be able to reliably do this with the Yosemite OS?

Mark Thompson is correct, Sony Catalyst Browse is the descendant to XDCAM Transfer and does exactly the same job together with many more (which I haven’t fathomed and don’t need). It will transcode all codecs shot on a Sony camera I would have thought. I have just got it because I will be shooting the new Sony XAVC codec and Transfer would not handle that. You need Mac OS later than 10.8.5 (Mountain Lion), I’ve gone to Yosemite (10.10), reluctant to go further in order to preserve the life of other software installed.

Ethan, I am doing exactly that with my previous productions. Importing DVCAM (or DV) tapes to a Media 100 timeline. If the original aspect is 4:3 I take the opportunity of re conforming in 16:9 which Media 100 does brilliantly through their Motion Editor. I steal a little from both top and sides which hardly disturbs the framing.
I then export as you do in the ProRes 422 HQ codec, it is the best codec to use. I then put the resultant file on two separate drives. This is where we might have problems in the future, drives fail!! I did consider using the new tape file archiving systems but thought that I would be over doing it rather, they are for the major broadcasters. As to your field problems, I’ve not had your experience. My films to date have been interlaced (top field first) although I’m now shooting progressive. In the Media 100 export window you can either check interlaced or leave it unchecked. I’ve never noticed a problem if I’ve done this right. What are others doing about archiving, it’s the problem for the future now everything is file based.
