Jim, I’m left eyed too, I think we’ve had this conversation before. That shoulder mount is awesome although there’s nothing much to it and it’s so light. What do you mean by ‘overseas’? Here in Europe we consider ourselves in the real centre of the world. PAL and all that glitters. If you look on the MitCorp site you could probably by the kit, not much money, I think I paid about $100 in your money.
I have had no problem at all with the zoom on my EX 1 – smooth as silk – and easy to go as slow as I want.
I hardly ever use more than 32 GB’s of cards on a single shoot so don’t need too many. I get about 55 minutes of 1920 X 1080i on a 16 GB S X S card.Michael Slowe

Jim, I also found it difficult focus wise after the great finder on my old DSR 300 but have gradually got used to my EX 1 and the screen. I too was tempted by the EX 3 finder but didn’t want the extra weight as I am hand holding a lot with my current documentaries. I use the CVP shoulder mount (from Mitcorp) which is both light in weight and cheap to buy and the ergonomics are great. The problem is I can’t get my eye near to the wonderful add on finder available from Hoodman. This almost replicates the finder fitted over the EX 3 screen and is just as effective. I also prefer to stick with the safety of the Sony S X S cards. How many do you need? I get by with 2 X 16 GB’s and 1 X 8GB. If I’m shooting more in a day then I download to a small portable drive using my MacBook Pro. It only takes 15 minutes for 16 GB’s so where’s the problem? These cards are expensive but hey, film was far worse!

Jeff, I have a similar computer set up to you, MacPro 2 x 2.66GHz Quad-Core, 8GB RAM running OS 10.6.7.
I bought the Lacie BD Burner which connects to the Mac via USB 2 and, working with Toast (10 or 11) can produce and copy Blu-Ray discs as easy as you like and the quality looks great. I edit XDCAM HD material (ingested with Sony XDCAM Transfer) in Media 100 and didn’t have to install any additional software. I’m a great fan of Toast and can never understand why people find it necessary to use other software such as compressor.Michael Slowe

Noah, might it be sensible to back up additionally the files on BD’s, following what you say. Many of us are reluctant to go the LTO tape route, the player/recorder is expensive and many production houses I’ve spoken to don’t like it anyway. I currently rely only on dedicated archive drives and run them frequently as you suggest. Do you see solid state non moving storage devices arriving soon?

Last question first. I do a lot of rough location shooting and use a rucksack (backpack) to carry the camera, mics, etc. This pack has wheels also which is good for using it for travel. Airlines don’t like big camera bags and mine just about complies with all the crazy rules now commonplace. If you take a tripod to your mountains then carry that with your hands that are now free from the camera.
As to your picture quality you just have to experiment. Look at Doug Jensen’s Picture Profiles, vary your exposure (in manual of course) and see what works for a given shot. Presumably you are a still photographer so the principles are identical. Same with your focal lengths but remember the very narrow DOF you’ll get with a long tele, together with more camera shake.

Jim, I only have the EX 1,not the ‘R’. I have no problems hand holding with a brace. My problem is not being able to use an eyepiece fixed to the screen because the brace holds the camera too far away. I can, of course, use the screen but don’t find it good enough for accurate focus in bright light.

Mr Sacci. The owner and engineer at Innobits, the makers of BitVice insists that 2 pass VBR beats i pass CBR everytime. 1 pass is for those that may not have time for 2. Otherwise why do the really expensive encoders for Hollywood films use dozens of passes?

So glad you are impressed with BitVice because I have been batting on about it for months on more than one Cow forum. I wish people would listen (you have!) because the encode is superior to that obtained with Compressor. I too think that you have not done a Self Contained export, can you post whether that was the problem, it helps all of us trying to fathom the ever more complicated work flows nowadays.
