  • Marcus, how much better off would we be with a 64 bit version? Would we have better images or is it because newer software would be operational with such a version?

Great Tutorial Andrew! I agree with all your suggestions, it would be nice to hear how Joseph got on with it.

Tell me, why the Z90 rather than the Z150?

I know the Z90 is more recent, with a better screen and auto focus, but the big drawback for me is the absence of an iris ring on the lens barrel. I’m so used to the conventional three rings, focus, zoom and iris, still found on most pro and semi pro cameras. Both have the disaster of ramping of the aperture on zooming. This means that at any sort of tele setting you are limited to f4. That’s a joke. You may be able to jack up the gain without too much quality loss but it makes it difficult to limit the DoF.

As Craig says, these two cameras are identical save for the ability to change lenses on the EX 3. Actually, there is another slight difference in that the EX 3 has rather a good eye piece which lowers over the side screen, thereby providing a magnified image of the screen which might be useful for more accurate focussing and, certainly, make life easier in bright sunlight. Otherwise, they are the same camera.

There you have it then, Z90 probably better than the Z150, although it’s a bit late for me. I do prefer having proper rings on the lens for focus, zoom and aperture though, how does the Z90 operate without them?

Craig’s advice seems pretty comprehensive (old time Cow contributor, Hi Craig!), but I thought that the PXW-Z150, had a higher spec than the Z90, maybe not. I replaced my EX 1 with the Z150 last year and although it shoots 4K, higher bit rates etc etc I don’t see any other improvement. In fact in one particular it is worse, namely the inability to keep the aperture setting at wide (f2.8) all the way through a zoom. As has been mentioned, these new small Sony cameras, although notionally with bigger sensors, do not make it easy to narrow the DoF. The aperture ‘ramps’ as the focal length is increased so that, at full tele, you only have f4. If only they had fitted a better lens the camera would be perfect (the weight balance would presumably be disturbed with a bigger lens).

The EX 1 was brilliant, as all users will know, but things move on I’m afraid. Craig, how does the Z90 compare with my Z150? I don’t want or need to shoot raw, is that the major difference?

  • I got fed up with the Sony transfer software, I now use EditReady, it’s brilliant, seems to handle anything. The one problem is that currently you can’t select ins and outs from a clip, have to convert the whole clip. With the large capacity modern drives this is not a real problem though.

Mark, all manual of course, as usual. Sometimes, if I have to track something I go to auto focus but nothing else. Do you use this camera?

Bob, I can’t find that picture on Vimeo but looking at my files I think that it must be. You only see the frond bit, the curved piece just hooks over the shoulder. There is a quick release mechanism when you need the tripod. The brace is really light, I hold the camera and press the record with my right hand leaving the left for focus etc etc . I’m left eyed and hood the screen, no magnification so focus can be tricky.

Bob, you requested a picture of my shoulder support. I have a couple on my i phone and could E Mail them to you if you don’t mind putting your E Mail in a post. I don’t know how you get a picture on to this forum. Thinking about your problem, I’m thinking that my support might not be substantial enough for your FS7. I used mine for years with the EX 1 and now with the Z150, works for me, especially when in tight corners and moving around shooting docs.
