Hi everyone, hoping somebody can help.

I have a 1 year old zoom h5 and recently bought an external mic to plug in to its xlr inputs. However, I’m finding when I select the input (1 or 2) the recorder turns itself off. This is happening regardless of whether a mic is plugged in and I have tried multiple xlr cables. I also happens when I try to alter the settings for those inputs. Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

    Hello Suzie,
I’ve been using a Zoom H5 recorder purchased over a year ago over many occasions with different XLR microphones and cables, using Input 1 or 2. It has been recording effectively.
I’m not aware of any issue of the recorder turning off upon selecting an input.
Does yours record using the Zoom microphone heads?
I think these respond to the selection for left and right channels.
Does the record function fail when you use the menu system to establish the settings?
When I use the menu it seems to establish settings for both inputs.
How do you try to alter settings for inputs 1 and 2?
Perhaps there is defect in your particular recorder?
I do study the manual whenever I haven’t used the recorder in a few months.
    Good luck.
    Robert

    Hi Suzie,
    Just a follow-up.
I did find some curious behavior when using the stereo Zoom H5 microphone attachment with an additional XLR mic in.
    No record shutoff, however.
I think I just didn’t understand what the recorder was supposed to be doing or what I was seeing on the level monitor.
I ended up with two .wav files on the card, a TR1 and a TRL-R, which seemed to have identical content but with different micing.
This was kind of a seat of the pants location situation–I need to try it again in a test situation.
And study the Fine Manual again.
    Best,
    Robert

You did not mention how you are powering your recorder?
It is possible that if you are operating on batteries that are running low,
the extra strain of producing phantom power may be too much for the batteries.

Recording audio without metering and monitoring is exactly like framing and focusing without looking at the viewfinder.

    Suzie and all:
My Zoom H5 shows 3 bars of battery power when the 2 AA batteries are newly replaced. It drops to 1 bar after an hour or two of use recording and powering one or more microphones that require phantom power. It seems like it could run for quite a while on 1 bar, but that’s when I replace them. Replaced batteries show in the green area on a battery tester, but I don’t want to experience battery runout.
    Best,
    Robert
