Hey- I’m a longtime lurker at creative cow, first time posting- excuse my exuberance.

thinking of investing in a Zoom H4n for a “Run and Gun” smallish shoot that I will be working on in the future. Has anyone here had any experience with it in a similar situation? Is there anything that would provide me more bang for my buck (in that general price range). I’m thinking using a shotgun most of the time, with the occasional pair of lavs together with the onboard mics for reference.
related question: I’ve heard that you can somehow bypass the onboard mics for an additional two inputs- has anyone tried this?

    Thanks!

I did a bit of research when I bought my H4n but I found that for the money it is amazing. I have used an XLR shotgun mic combined with a lav in the 3.5mm jack which disables the onboard mics before, don’t know about getting two in there though. I like it becuase it is really easy to use, has a nice big clear screen and the audio quality is great. I would recommend it.

IMHO it sucks if you’re doing anything else than just recording sound.
It sez it’s a BWF recorder, but there is no way to sync it to anything, or let anything sync to it.

So without timecode, it’s useless in a dual system shoot.

    Just my opinion…

Here is some software that auto syncs audio within Final Cut and Vegas, if it helps, I am waiting for them to release a version for Premiere.
