ZOETROPE effect? Is it possible?
Posted by Adam Heayberd on October 25, 2011 at 10:20 amWe are looking to re-create a zoetrope in after effects and im trying to think how this could be possible…
Is there a script that can be created to allow say, 24 images to roll behind a few blocks of black, be sped up to then show a continuous looking image?
Any ideas / pointers would be grately appreciated.

October 25, 2011 at 2:00 pmAre you looking for something such as this:
Or do you want the flickering, rolling, cylindrical Zoetrope type of effect? I know there have been tutorials on the Cow, and I think they call it “flip book” effect. Not exactly the same thing.

October 25, 2011 at 2:22 pmThe flip book style is smart and we may utilise that effect but we are looking to utilise the flickering, rolling, cylindrical Zoetrope type of effect…if thats possible?

October 25, 2011 at 8:07 pmYou’d probably want some footage of a real zoetrope (or a good animation of one) as a reference. You can use time remapping to control the timing of the footage so you can “speed up” the zoetrope. I don’t know of any formulas for this, but I don’t think it would be too hard to engineer if you have a good reference…. Post one for us and we’ll help you think it through!

Go to about 32 sec in for an original zoetrope…
it would be nice to emulate the black bars flicking across the images and then as it speeds up it becomes one continuous shot…
So thinking about it, you would need all the photos in a sequence, side by side, from 1 – 24 or however many, then in z space have those black bars and spaces in front of the images, then somehow, either with a camera or if there is an expression for the photos to then roll from left to right, (depending on the order), for the image to become continuous and also for a speed ramp to occur so that it becomes one whole image, then, with that, some sort of loop applied!?!?!
