ZFS for editing?
I just read on MacRumors that Apple has seeded a developer preview of ZFS read/write for Leopard. I’ve read a bit about ZFS since first hearing rumors that Apple was heading in that direction, but I’m definitely no programmer, and didn’t fully get what I read. Anyone know how this new file system might effect editors o if this file system will be better, worse, or neutral compared to HFS+ for media drives?

From what I read the actual retail version of Leopard will only support read-only for ZFS volumes. ZFS is pretty powerful so I don’t think current machines can use it without taking a noticeable performance hit. I think ZFS is in Apple’s plans for way down the road (meaning years from now). Their next OS (Cougar?) might fully implement it. So by including the read-only ability in Leopard now, it ensures ZFS will have some degree of backward compatibility on older Macs still running Leopard.
As far as ZFS advantages, I’m not an expert but from what I’ve read it could be great editors. Data will be much safer, and there is even the possibility of running a SAN without SAN software (multiple machines accessing the same disk without XSan having to coordinate everything). It also sounds like it could make RAID completely obsolete.
