    hello,

i have a little scene with 4 cubes equally spaced out on the x and z, so that they make a square. my camera rotates around a point of interest at 0,0,0. and i have a layer with particular. my particals are shooting straight up in the air starting from 0,0,0. so basically everything in my scene is centered at 0,0,0.

my problem is as my camera rotates around the particles the near cube should obscure the particles but the far cubes also cover my particles although they should be behind. i places my particular layer under the 4 cubes. i am not sure how i can fix this. would i need to create somsort of z depth thing for the cubes. i have never done such a thing. so i do not understand how or where to begin…

    i appreciate any suggestions.

if the particles are always within the square space between the cubes (they aren’t spilling over the tops of the cubes or somehow getting in front of them), then you can trick ae into making this work pretty easily.

first you’ll need to make the particular layer a 3d layer (ignore the warning). this layer will need to be placed in the correct 3d position to reside with the space between your cubes (this may require repositioning your emitter depending on how you’ve set things up at this point).

then, with that layer selected, choose layer>transform>auto orient and choose to always face the camera.

now, as your camera rotates, the particular layer should always reside in the correct 3d space, but the camera should appear to rotate around the particle system. this should work well if the particles never come between the camera and the front cube.

Particular doesnt support blockage from 3D layers… only layer hierarchy in the comp window will govern which layers show up on top…. u probably have to fake it… I.E split your layers (identical ones on top and below particular) and alternate which ones are on… or make multiple particular layers and sand which the action… like people in a snow storm… big snow particular layer on top of them… fine dense snow layer underneath them
