Ok, I’m new to this so please be patient with me.
About that atyao “locus of light” whip. Your instructions for the first step were great. I got a great curvy line mask but now I’m stumped again at Step 2. I got rid of the first solid and applied the render>stroke effect, entered the values but do they change over time? Or what?
The atayo instructions says to “apply keyframe animation to the line”. But how? I just don’t get it. I’ve duplicated the layer as they said, with a slight offset and I’m seeing one short squiggly white line but I don’t know how to get it to follow the mask path. The instrux also alludes to the track matte but is vague.
I feel totally retarded.

I dont know what your referring to exactly butt…
I believe he means change the rotation over time. When using the stroke effect you want to limit the start and end points of the stoke and then by rotating it around the stroke it travels the line.
Then for synthetic feel i think he adds a turbulent displacement and cycles the evolution.

I just worked through that Tutorial last night — it is hard to follow. What I did was set a start and end keyframe on the first frame (start 1%, end 0%) then jumped to the last frame and set start at 100% and end at 99%. That got the stroke to move through the whole animation.
As far as track matte, when you dup the layer, set the bottom layer to track matte (with the other layer as the target).
Sorry I am not in front of AE right now or I would be more specific with the technicals — hope it helps though.

Thank you both for responding — but I’m still getting nowhere. I’d really like to be able to use this effect in an upcoming job, but something crucial is missing.
Can you please walk me through the steps — take NOTHING for granted, because there must be something I’m missing. I successfully used the wiggler to get a great mask path (even tho I don’t understand how applying those keyframes to a single point would create such a great curvy line????)
Beyond that step, I’m lost. Can one of you PLEASE explain to me very slowly, as if I were a 3-year old, just what to do next? I’m a very new newbie and I’m totally lost.
