Zacuto – Info, please
Hey people,
First post in this forum (usually in the audio forums). I was wondering if anyone here has had experience with a company called Zacuto. They do rentals, sales, etc. and are coming to demo their wares at the end of the month.
If anyone has any information regarding them, it would be much appreciated. End-users would be nice, but if anyone is a retailer or has used any of the gear, it would be fantastic to know your opinions of it.

Zacuto promotes itself heavily. They loudly claim their products to be “the new standard” and “the leader.” Their products seem to be sturdy, well machined, often heavy, and very expensive. Before I bought anything from them, I would look around for other solutions. It is possible I view them with too jaundiced an eye. Take my comments with the usual several grains of salt.

I’ve used some of their HD rental stuff. Their version of the “Israeli Arm” works very well, I think. Their cameras and grip gear were tip top and functioned well. So far they seem to be doing all right. They have more and bigger toys than I usually have need of. I think they make a good addition to the Chciago market with Roscor and Fletcher.
Their marketing people got their wrist slapped a little bit here on the COW a while ago for posting some spam-like marketing info pretending to be a user comment. But after some prompt and sharp correction, they have not repeated that mistake. I give everybody one free swing, nobody’s perfect.
I would say they are definitely worth a trial rental or a browse, and I look forward to seeing what they look like in another ten years or so. Everybody’s earnest in the beginning; the truer measure is what they look like after a decade or more.

I have some Zacuto gear, it is top notch, handmade in the USA stuff. It is expensive but worth it if you are a pro and make a living with it.
If you are a hobbyist, I agree with Rick, check out other stuff. I guess it all depends on what you need. If you price out a shoulder mount for a smaller camera like an EX1 or HPX170, the Zacuto version is pretty expensive, if it were me, I would buy the Red Rock version, it is almost as practical and costs about half the price.
If you are building up a 35mm adapter system, their rod mount, baseplate and all of the little fittings and accessories are superb, better than anything else on the market IMHO.
I have tried the Letus, Cavision, Cinevate stuff and while it is okay, it isn’t in the same league as the Zacuto stuff. In the case of 35mm adapter system fittings, risers, baseplates, Israeli Arms, etc. they are the best money can buy.
