  Z1 – recently seems to have soft focus problem

  Hello hello.

  I’m not a trained cinematographer but I film docs with a Z1. Most recently I’ve got a feeling something is off with the ‘push to focus’ facility. I mostly keep it on manual and push to focus before recording (in interviews for example) or when reframing. The distance readings it give me seem to vary a bit too much from one push to the next.

  Also, on inspection of captured footage, it always seems a bit out and soft.

  So I thought of asking
  – is there anything in the mechanics of the distance-detection that needs re-calibrating/servicing? (dust in the camera??)
  – Is there a way (with a yardstick/meter ruler) to test the autofocus to find out for sure?
  – perhaps this this normal and should I just use the ‘expanded preview’ facility to focus manually by eye?
