This might be a silly question but… playing around with some of the more stylistic corrections for a music video I started playing around with the YSFX sliders (that as of the latest update appeared on the Wave).

What I can’t seem to grasp is what their potential uses are. Actually I’m not sure I’m quite understanding what they do in the first place, in terms of how exactly they affect the image. Would anyone be so kind as to shed some basic light on the matter?

Basically they invert the selected channel e.g. luma channel YSFX will give you a negative image which I use for inverting some old film scans.

I thought i’d never use them but……I now use them quite frequently for setting stylised looks such as a music video i’m currently working on which was shot on the Canon 7D with great old nikon prime lenses. The picture was too clean / modern for the look we were going for so I used the YSFX to emulate an old Kodachrome / vintage style look.

I’ll try to post a before / after when the piece is released.

My understanding is that the YSFX controls essentially let you invert the signal, creating negative effects. It’s cool, but I’ve not yet had a job where this type of look would be appropriate. On the other hand, this comment is likely to be followed by 12 others who’ve used this for interesting things. It is neat to have this kind of control available on a per-channel basis, however.

Interesting. I’ll definitely have to play around with it more – at first inspection it seemed to be doing more than just inverting. Maybe it can be used with some qualifiers for cool effect though

I don’t think the looks it provides have much to do with what even music video colorists are asked to do regularly, but I’m glad it’s there and it’s not unheard of for what eventually turns out to be a hit music video to have a crazy look, and then everybody after wants the same thing. All about trends.

What I *have* found that Davinci makes easy and is a popular look these days is clipping the lows up from the bottom using the clip sliders, and then tinting those blacks/greys in another node. See Kanye West’s latest for an example of that. Also seen it in some high-end commercials as well.
