    Hi Everyone,

I am relatively new on the whole uploading to youtube thing so I was wondering if I could get some advice from you.

I know that youtube allows 2gb uploads but what I haven’t been able to find is a more final conclusion on size of files to upload to youtube.

Sounds like a pretty broad question doesn’t it but here I go trying to explain where I am at:

I shoot with a canon XA20, fantastic camera don’t let anyone tell you any different, the files are AVCHD at 1080p at either 24 of 50fps.

Minute per minute what file size should I be making these final compositions?

I edit in premier cc and most of the time just pick the youtube setting and match the source but I feel this may the wrong way to go.

I am not doing anything with really fancy effects or anything like that, titles, cross dissolves and snappy cutting thats all.

For example lets say I have a 4 minute final clip full 1080P? Can someone give me a range on what size that should be between?

Again I know it is a broad question but if I want the highest quality possible without a file size that will take a million years to upload where should I aim?

Thanks in advance for any feedback,
    Jake

P.S. Personal opinions welcome, don’t feel like you have to tow the company line, if something works well for you I would love to know tried and true techniques and if you have any links you would like to share that would be very helpful.

Here are my guidelines for H.264 bitrates in bits/pixel:

0.07 bpp – minimum quality for online streaming (YouTube, Vimeo)
0.12 bpp – Apple standard for online streaming
0.20 bpp – upper limit for online streaming
0.40 bpp – good quality local viewing or further compression
0.70 bpp – high quality local viewing (DVD/Blu-ray)

For online submission and second transcode I recommend 0.2-0.4 bpp H.264, or about 10-20 Mbps for 1080p at 24-25 fps. This correlates with Vimeo’s compression guidelines.

Therefore at 10-20 Mbps a 4 minute video stream would be 300-600MB.
