  • YouTube upload badly distorts high-quality rendering – tips?

Posted by Michael Leibson on February 16, 2019 at 11:51 am

I used Sony Vegas Pro 13 to create an animated video in which all the visual material came from relatively high quality photographic images. As a total beginner, I began by simply zooming in to details, creating movement by panning, and obtaining richer textures and colours by superimposing (layering) various images simultaneously. As I progressed, I learned how to use various Fx, and combined them in more and more ways.

Here is the full video, as an mp4: https://ln.sync.com/dl/2e952e050/mqgsd637-2zv6wghq-n2mh584d-h5w2fxsm

Here is a slightly more recent version, in m2t format, that was uploaded to YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24D9tVqNt-w

You will notice that the YouTube version creates a lot of distortion. I am wondering why — and whether there is anything I can do to fix the situation.
(In case this may be related, you can find the original photographs that were used at the bottom of my webpage (that is dedicated to this music and video), https://thinkingmusic.ca/all .)

Here are the Sony Vegas project properties I used:

And here are the mp4 rendering settings I used:

I also uploaded the mp4 version to YouTube, but it was even more distorted.
I also rendered with 4k settings, but all that did was make the YouTube distortions “crisper”.

It took me a year to create this video, and it is disappointing to see it distorted like this on YouTube, so any suggestions as to how I might improve results would be very welcome! Thanks in advance!

increase the project properties and render template from 29.970 fps to 59.940 fps. In event properties (in the timeline) select ‘Disable Resample’, in your Project properties change the Field Order to ‘None (progressive scan) to match that in your render template, then bump up the max and average bite rate in your Render Template to about twice what you have it, see if any of that will improve it.

    Best Regards……George

    Thank-you, George!

    A few related questions:

Re. ‘Disable Resample’: The only way I know of doing this is by using the Selection Edit Tool, selecting all the tracks except the audio tracks, and then going to Edit -> Switches -> Disable Resample. I see that by right-clicking a track event/clip, there is the same option — but I have at least 75 tracks, with even more events than that. Is there an easier way of doing that for all tracks (other than audio) than that?

If these changes turn out to have no positive effect, could it be — as some have suggested — that the problem is simply YouTube’s compression method, and that I should instead use Vimeo?

    Thanks again!

Maybe also try with a 32 bit timeline !

‘Disable Resample’, in your Project properties ! You can only do this in Magix Vegas Pro 14/15/16

Is there an easier way of doing that for all tracks (other than audio) than that? In sony Vegas Pro 13 – Yes

You can use a script: Disable Resample All Events

Place the Disable Resample All Events in: C-drive – Programs – Sony Vegas Pro 13 – Script Menu

In Sony vegas Pro 13 – Go to Options – Customize Toolbar – look for Disable Resample All Events on the left side – and Add – then close ! Then you got a new icon in the toolbar !

    Thank-you, Ole!

If I run that script, will it also affect audio tracks? (I gather that’s something I should not do!)

Some online videos say that one can use the Selection Edit tool, and use Shift and/or Ctrl while dragging the tool in order to select only those tracks and clips one wants to affect — that way, one can deselect the audio tracks. Will this work, in Sony Vegas Pro 13?

    Thanks!

[Ole Kristiansen] “Disable Resample All Events – is only for the video track !

Thanks again, Ole! Do you mean that the script will automatically NOT affect audio tracks?

Thanks to George and Ole for your generous help! Unfortunately, the re-configured and re-rendered version — once uploaded to YouTube — still had the same distortions throughout.

    I’ll give Vimeo a try . . .

    Thanks, again, for helping!
