When (if) you guys upload high quality video to YouTube how do you approach that? Do you upload full frame AVI or some other format?

Currently I render to AVI and then use Windows Movie Maker (I have the free Vegas plug, thanks, haven’t actually tried it yet) and let it do what it does, which is make an “HD?” 1280 x 720 WMV (which is not bad quality and much smaller in size) and then upload it automatically. The most recent was 332mb, a 10 minute video. The original was 58gb so obviously I couldn’t upload that one anyway.

I’m on DSL and even semi-long WMV’s like this one kinda take a good bit of time to upload so I’m just curious how others here approach that… what formats people are using.

    Thanks.

I use the Sony AVC render type with the Internet 16:9 HD 30p template.

Thanks you John. I’ll try that next time. Do you upload manually through YouTube or use the free plug or some other method?

    Thanks.

Thanks. I actually just tried the plug and the upload failed. I’m actually glad it failed because the vid was pretty screwed up.

I’m going to render it per your instructions and try that.

P.S. I’ve notice that some rendering directly to some compressed formats will change cropping and some other things. I’ve seen that before with WMV and it just did it again with MP4. Not sure why, but in the past I’d render to AVI first and then to the compressed format. I may have to do that here.

Anyway… thanks. This place is a great source of information.

There is no reason to render to AVI first if you select the correct render template for MP4. I usually work with my project in the same resolution as my render. This keeps things simple with no surprises.

I generally upload in AVC. Most of my stuff is using one of the Internet AVC templates, maybe tweaked a bit… but ultimately, around 6Mb/s for a 720/24p or 720/30p upload.

Last June, I did a couple of same-day wedding uploads while staying in California in a place with really great Internet, and did 1080p uploads at 20Mb/s. It definitely looked better playing back at 1080p, which practically no one can do from YouTube. The 720p stuff was limited by YouTube’s deliver rate… no difference from the 6Mb/s 720p stuff I had done before.
