At the beginning of the year, I made the big switch from PC to Mac. I had Avid Xpress Pro 4.whatever on my PC. I loved it. It worked great. So then I installed it on the Mac, and it didn’t work to begin with because I had a dual-core G5. So I downloaded what was at that time the latest update (maybe it was 4.8.1?) and it worked great… Until today. Last night, I downloaded and installed the latest OS update from Apple. And this morning I clicked the Xpress Pro icon and nothing happened for about ten minutes until it finally said “Your system is not licensed to run this software. Please contact an Avid representative for further assistance.” So I thought that all I probably needed to do was install the latest version of Xpress Pro. I installed it, but I still get the same message. I tried contacting ‘an Avid representative’ but only got their voicemail. I am pretty sure that a one time call to the support team costs more than I paid for the software anyway. How do I make Xpress Pro work again?

Good luck on this one. I had the same problem with mine and I am on a PC. They do not offer support for this product because it is a low-end part of their line. I had to actually talk to the president of the company to get something done and since I am a broadcaster who spends close to a million dollars a year, I was able to get it done. I was origionally told that I had to go to their online forums (Which are moderated by people like you and me, not employees of AVID) Anyway, it all ended up that there is a hotfix for windows that I had to uninstall and then it worked. I would think that it is the same type of problem with your MAC. You probably need to uninstall a certin patch and it will work. I just don’t know which one it would be.

Thanks for your reply. I tried calling Avid, but I got their answering machine.

So after that, I did what I should have done to begin with: I searched the knowledge base at avid.com. Somehow I stumbled upon the answer to my question: The OS update from OS X 10.4.6 to 10.4.7 is to blame. Apparently, the license dongle’s drivers are not compatible with 10.4.7. They are working on a solution to the problem. I just hope that it arrives before I leave for school on Wednesday. Otherwise, I may be stuck with iMovie until October!

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the peer-to-peer/user-to-user support you get on the Avid forums, it’s one of the best and most active forums I know. Don’t knock it until you try it.

Your big time call into Mr. Krall would’ve been completely unnecessary as you would’ve found the answer in a matter of minutes on the Avid forums. This is why they have the user support forum in the first place for the XpressPro and lower product line.

But, since you’re obviously “above” that level of support I guess you can make your calls…. and feel important.

Avid offers the same support for Xpress Pro that it offers for Adrenaline and higher systems. It’s called Avid Assurance and costs $495/year. It’s kind of odd you were told they don’t support this product. While not technically considered “corporate level” or whatever their buzz phrase is, Xpress Pro is not the ugly stepchild some make it out to be. It’s a perfectly capable online editor and the backbone of many smaller pro operations.

They didn’t offer this until just recently at the XpressPro level, so the above comments were made based on the previous conditions.

PS, I agree that XpressPro is a great solution for the independent freelance editor (such as myself) or a small post house.

    Hello Kenton,

Since you seem to want to feel so important and knock someone who gives an answer that you do not like, then I will tell you Mister Big that if you ever try this again, I will close your account and send you packing in an instant. We do NOT tolerate this kind of disrespect for a moment here in the Cow. Kapeesh???

So heed the warning or take your bad attitude elsewhere.

Consider yourself bitten by yer pal,
