I think I’d find a new editor! Tom-ay-to, tom-ah-toh…it’s all semantics. But it’s still wrong.

    Mark,

I almost fell out of my chair laughing at the “Hauling Oats” story. Wow…that’s a classic!

I love you Steve but your editor is right. One result (a mispelling) can have two causes. A broken leg can be the result of accident (typo) or design (misspelling). (Better pay that mortgage, if the mob is your banker.)

Labelling something as “misspelled” implies that the typist doesn’t know better. That’s why the word “typo” is so useful, and in this case, more precise. Do you really think your editor thinks “conventoinal” is the correct spelling?

I’m glad you posted this. This incident sounds trivial but it can be a real challenge to find words which correct people without offending them. “Typo” is a great word to use for this situation.

    Steve,

The conversation you describe is a hard to read without tone of voice and body language.

The fact that you were packing while viewing did make it a little more clear that your editor was actually begging for his life when he said, “It’s not misspelled…” 🙂

The relevance to this thread is the misspelled chyron in the middle.
