Resizing is done on input. First.

    Hi,

I’m about to through the same process you did with upconverting SD to HD, using resolve to color. How did it work out for you? Did resolve use the upconverted image to color instead of the SD image. How was the Teranex?

    Hi Ernest,

We postponed the project and I did not get to test the process.

Hello, I’m about to do a similar project: SD to HD up convert, color in resolve. So I was also wondering what the best workflow is. I have a Teranex box and was going to upconvert at the end, after grading, but I wanted to view the images in HD as I colored. So you said Resolve upconverts on input, what does that mean, through a node? Or does it actually change the media from SD to HD when the media is imported? I’m also doing noise reduction with neat video when I export the media back to FCP7.

    Thanks in advance.

I realize this is an old thread. I have tested this workflow and seem to find that Resolve does NOT handle pixel aspect ration conversion correctly going from SD to HD or HD to SD. It seems to in the timeline but renders are incorrect when taken to a different tool.

I would test this carefully before committing to Resolve for any conversions between differing PAR.

I would be interested in knowing more about this evaluation.

Is this a subjective opinion/oberservation, meaning, you don’t like the way it looks? (which would be totally fine)

Or did you subject the uprez footage to some sort of technical evaluation? If so, I’d be interested to learn how to recognize a good uprezing job.

    Thanks,

We tried to be as objective as possible. We compared the Resolve conversions from HD to SD and SD to HD with hardware conversions of the same material. By hardware I mean both up and down converts using the built in convertors of Sony VTRs. We used the hardware conversions of the AJA Kona 3 cards and we used the Snell & Wilcox Alchemist. All files were imported into several NLEs to see how they were interpreted.

We liked the “look” of the Resolve conversions well enough. It was the purely technical issues we found unacceptable. Pixel aspect ratio was wrong in both directions. Plus – and as this was awhile ago so I may be wrong on this – I believe we found that field order was not being dealt with correctly in the conversions.

We reported these issues to Blackmagic. I have not retested with v11 of Resolve. Just have not had the time.

    Jef
